I'm an instrument of the Universe, too, blue!
I've even been called a tool.

A friend of mine, who is also an atheist, is writing a book on his "spiritual journey". I found his definition of spirituality very unique. As a newly self-defined atheist, ex-JW, I had never even conceived of such a definition of spirituality (not surprising given the JW concept of spirituality as meeting attendance and door knocking)
He says that "spirituality" is a letting go of the need to "make meanings" or even worse the need to impose meanings on ourselves, others and the world around us. Spirituality is simply our experiential awareness of the present moment, and allowing it to unfold as it will. Awareness of the inter-connectedness of all things is a part of it, also.
Isn't it ironic that religion, which was originally designed to remind us of the spiritual/spirit world is so often the instrument that divides us and causes us to deny our interconnectedness? It is because ultimately, in the development of the rituals of religion, we must use language, describe, and to do so is to give/impose meaning on the world around us and our relationship to it.
"The plague of man is the certainty of knowing".
Montaigne

Exactly.

Yes.

Very ironic.
The problem lies in personalization and localization of the Universal.
If all the sacred writings and their accompanying dogmas were to disappear, what would be left?
The Oneness of all things.

Yes, and that personilization comes from imposing our "meanings" on to ourselves and others. We think we know for a certainty "who I am" and we think we know for a certainty "who you are" and we think we know for a certainty "what that event means and signifies" and we try to keep those meanings in tact desite all further evidence to the contrary or despite the many plagues we have to visit upon ourselves and others in order to do so. And we do take it very, very personally when anyone disagrees with our meanings. Hence the quote from Montaigne.
If all the sacred writings and their accompanying dogmas were to disappear, what would be left?
The Oneness of all things.
Ahh nvrgnbck! My kindred spirit! I feel very at one with you right now! If we are ever in the same neck of the woods, we must get together and discuss the meaning (or lack there of) of life!
