Gregor, think of it this way, if you are somebody who collects, let's say, paintings, you're going to have pieces you will never want to let go, that you'll take with you wherever you may go. Tattoos are like that. Great pieces of art so intimate that the best way to keep them is on yourself. Or you have an old picture of your dear old grandpa, what better way to honor him and making sure that picture survives for the rest of your life than to have it done in your skin.
Skin is great to use as canvas. It only vanishes when you do. -

Got ear piercings as a ritual after claiming my own life (two on left). Got cat tattoos later, but well after.

Maddie: My partner has that knotwork around his right bicep (all around the arm) - another "ouch" on the tender inner arm area!
