I like fried chicken and watermelon.

I'm gonna go check my mirror, and make sure I didn't change colors.

What we like, however, is not entirely due to upbringing, as shown by my sister's kid's taste for pickles and mustard.

I have to back you on this, John Doe. I have two examples to mention.

My first husband and I separated when our daughter was 10 months. He loved red beans and rice, and I mean l-o-v-e-d them.

I never acquired a taste for them, and never served them to our daughter. Well, guess who started cooking red beans/rice as soon as she could manage it?

16 years later, along comes another daughter by another father. I used to love pork sausages as a child. I mean l-o-v-e-d them. I quit eating pork long before this daughter came along because it exacerbated my blood pressure problem. I NEVER cooked pork or had it served to this child.

I enrolled my daughter in a day care where they often served pork sausage links for breakfast. She loved them so much that her teachers used to save some for her to take home with her. They would scold me for not buying any sausages for that poor baby!

Now, I ask, where did they acquire the taste for red beans and pork sausage?

Sylvia, when I was pregnant with my daughter, all of the sudden I loved turnip greens. Go figure?? Guess who would eat them as soon as she was done with baby food? I guess it works both ways. When I was carrying baby girl, she wanted some strange food. Thank God she never craved chitlins in utero.

Yes indeed. And it doesn't matter the country. Listening to some Afro-Cuban beats right now. That's my stuff. My baby was moving to it before he could walk. BTS

Babies can remember what they hear in utero, especially the sound of their parents' voices.
