Well, yea Hill, I'm sorry, but it's like smokers "rights". They are the ones who persist in dangerous behavior, why should everyone around them have to suffer? `hill

Beks... I dont quite get that comment... I would expect a large person to pay for the space they consume... and even (God forbid) not be allowed on commercial flights if their disability created a greater risk for others to safely evactuate an aircraft.

Smokers rights? Buy a house and smoke all ya want in it... or buy into a private club that allows smoking ... Public venues are public... and non-smoking regulations have been upheld in courts in the US.

Even a Republican..no Libert... no angry white man like me sees a need for goverment to regulate safety on interstate carriers.

While we are at this... I wear a size 8.5 E shoe ...my buddy wears a 16 B. Why dont his shoes (make for make) cost 2x mine? Sometimes they do... sometimes they dont. Should the government regulate this issue? Either side could argue prices (same or more) are not fair to one or the other of us.

    The Truth about
    Phobia Of Fat People

Phobia of fat people originated during the 20th century and is a recent concept. Fat phobia is a condition in which an individual dislikes being fat and feels irritated to see obese tendencies in other people.

Now, a large section of beauty and sophistication conscious population are affected by phobia of fat people. Therefore, they started associating the concept with laziness, with deeply rooted pathology and ugliness.

This ultimately led to unscientific starvation processes and life-threatening surgeries. In particular, the female section of the society started developing chronic and uncompromising eating habits such as anorexia and bulimia.

Due to phobia of fat, people started forming an idea that excessive weight gain may lead to sexual reluctance. Women have the impression that an obese appearance loses its attraction towards the opposite sex and this may unfortunately lead to marital depression.

Moreover, according to the Americans, fat people lack self-confidence and essential willpower and they prefer to blame themselves for being obese. Since then, an anti fat attitude has gained much popularity and now people worldwide have a strong abhorrence for both fatness and fat people.

Again because of phobia of fat, people started believing in the Freudian concept of psychological pathology. According to this concept, people who are obese are undoubtedly psychologically sick.

This means that fatness is directly related to mental abnormality. Gradually a strong resentment was developed against obesity and people supported the idea that a strong and healthy body is in fact the secret behind a strong and healthy mind.

Phobia of fat people has gained enormous magnitude and this has led to an international consciousness against fatness and fat related concepts. Moreover, the socio cultural influences of media that is television, magazines, movies and other forms of entertainment provide immense tips on how to stay healthy, trim and slim.

Such media based information has adversely affected a large section of the women population ultimately leading to body image disturbance, body dissatisfaction and increased rate of eating disorders.

Phobia of fat people or obesophobia also popularly known as pocrescophobia has caused needless distress to countless people.

This awkward phobic condition used to takes months and even years to be completely cured. However, new research says that with the right kind of Neuro Linguistic Programming Self-Help , fear of obesity can be successfully eliminated just within 5 days.

Through the successful implication of NLP self-help techniques phobia of fat people can be completely cured by introducing the individual to a set of positive suggestions.

Makes sense to me. I've never had an airline complain if I used two seats, or even a whole row, when I was flying on an empty plane. I pay them to get me from point A to point B in relative comfort (though the last part is an unwritten, merely understood portion of the contract) with an understanding that they make their money by filling their planes. When I sat next to a 6'10" guy, built like an athlete, the fact that they wouldn't (maybe couldn't) upgrade him to first class was bad for him and me.

Just deal with the reality; obese people (and some others as well) need more space. Don't bitch, accommodate.

To be clear about my experience, the guy that spilled over into my seat wasn't just overweight. He was obese...his weight had to be in excess of 400 pounds.

And I don't care if its genetics, he can't help it or if he just ate too damn much...his fat ass was in my space...space I paid for and wasn't getting to use and made me very uncomfortable for 9 or so hours.

Let's face it....most Americans are already overweight but if someone is so large that they can't fit into normal seating arrangements that the rest of fat-ass America doesn't have problems with, then tough shit..you should have to pay a surcharge for taking up more than the average and reasonable amount of space.

Yes, there are handicapped people in this world. But let's face this fact as well...you can't fix everything to make the world accesible to all handicapped people. I'm as sorry as can be that people have these afflications but there's a point where they have to accept that maybe they can't do everything a normal person can do and learn to live with it. If that means, in this airline situation, that they'll have to pay extra for space on a plane, well they just need to pony up the bucks and shut the fuck up about it.

You sure don't sound as sorry as you can be to me.

For all you know, maybe the guy was on his way to have surgery for his obesity so he isn't feeling like human feces because he's taking up someone else's space. And btw, handicapped people have every friggin right to try and do anything and everything possible to live as normal a life as they can. Why the hell should they just have to "accept" their lots in life? Walk a mile in their shoes or you shut the f*ck up.

By all means you have every right to be comfortable in the space you paid for, not disputing that fact. Did you ask to be moved to another seat? Or did you just silently fume for hours over the fact that "mister fat ass" was taking up your space? Sometimes the lack of empathy shown by some on here reminds me very much of the borg. Fit in or get out mentality at it's finest.

Some have posted here using the words fat or large, you can be large and not fat.

You can be fit and trim and not call people fatasses.

would I be a bastard if I offered this person a draft cross horse to ride? After all that Belgian cross I have to offer 'screams' fat guy please..

First, the likelihood that a fat guy would even ask is slim to none. Fat people know they're fat and more often than not AVOID such activities. In your case, the fat guy knows he needs a horse who can accommodate him... and so Belgian or whathaveyou, would just be grateful you have a horse that can accommodate him.

Seats and structure on airplanes is limited by the space it can fit in. The seats are designed and space is allowed for folks with average bodie size.

No, the space is designed to get the most "bang" for the airline's buck. This is borne out in the severe lack of LEG room that most of them have.. Should tall people be charged extra because their legs take up more space?

We dont even want to start on the escape systems used on airliners... I'd argue it may be unsafe to other passengers who would have to wait on the evacuation of a 450 pounder in an emergency.

Lord help us, then, if there's some other kind of incapacitated person on board. More likely than not, it would be someone like my son who would have the girth... and strength... to lift the normally wheelchair bound grandma out the escape door.

From your perspective, fat people should'nt ride horses (because we know that everyone pre-auto was thin) or airplane... and neither, perhaps, should pudgy handicapped people, 'cause they might get in someone's way, too.

    Your perspective is terribly flawed.

    Peace.

a guest... the horse stuff is not theoretical on my part. I have wrangled horses on public trails and worked with a disabled 4H group.

You sir.. would be suprised at how many BIG people there are out there willing to give things a whirl. OH Purps... show me any buy over 7 foot tall that doesnt weight near 300 pounds. This has nothing to do with "weight consistant with height" standards...heavy is heavy.

And yea.. airliners are arranged to make money... but the seats are built to structural standards to make them safe. Some silly shit about weight and deceleration forces and such...

the live loading of the floor the seats ..and the hardware that nails the seats to the floor gets a little slide-rule time in engineering too.

the world has much bigger issues to contend with

The world, yes, dear SS. Given their comments, for some here who are small-bodied (and, based on their comments, even smaller-minded... and we won't even go to the size of their hearts), perhaps not so much.

    Peace to you!

I was agreeing with you Hill. Guess I wasn't too clear.

SS, causes of obesity that are not related to diet and exercise are definitely in the minority.
