Have you noticed that JW's who've been "raised in the truth" are crappy spellers?

just about anything triggers the Miss Jones "stereotype" crying knee-jerk reaction

What? The thread title was completely stereotypical. It was not a knee jerk reaction for God's sake.

I think more of them suffer from headintheass syndrome more than bad spelling.....

I have never seen a spelling error or typo in Watchtower literature. Shame about its more than 120 years of failed prophecies though.

I find that bad spelling (as opposed to typing --my arthritis is a handicap) is more a function of generation. When I grew up, spelling tests were automatic and good spelling was required as a subject such as reading and math. Not so much in today's world. So I'm sure we'd find that younger witnesses tend to be challenged along with the rest of their generation. Just like Lady Lee I found that those in my university could not spell and had never been required to make spelling a grading aspect of their papers. My history and English teachers would take points off your grade for bad spelling and grammar but not much so any more. After we live in the world of spell check (but not on JWN).

There is a good reason why born-in witlesses tend to be crappy in spelling (and just about everything else). Just try going to the Kingdumb Hell one Thursday evening and see how late the boasting session lets out--now, when does that leave children time to study for school? And they are tired all the time (and it is going to be even worse when you factor in the field circus arrangements for 3:00 in the afternoon for school children--even less time for studying for school. It is a well documented fact that children that do not get enough sleep tend to learn poorly (and anyone can do the research on that subject at will, using any sources one wants).

Those of us who went in as adults already learned to spell (and all their other school subjects) while they were worldly people. Thus, they have a better chance of learning to spell than those who had no chances outside boasting sessions and field circus. And that is not very likely to deteriorate--as long as they are able to find the words in their Bibles or the Washtowels, they will continue to be able to spell them correctly.

I think part of it is due to the texting deal, however as someone who gets MANY comments and messages from current JWs (most of which were raised in) this is a stereotype because it's true. Alot of times I have to run my messages through a spell-checker to understand what they are talking about.

I'm not a born-in JW, and I also won spelling contests at our little two room country school.

In fact, I could spell better than some of my teachers.

Note to Steve2: "my mother had my siblings and me read ..."

    Edit

I always attributed our early exposure to the printed word with making my siblings and I very good spellers and, because the magazines were printed in Australia, we were not exposed to American spelling

Your spelling is admirable; now, about that grammar!
