Why are we repulsed at the though to consuming human milk?

I saw a story this morning about a guy who is making cheese using his wife's breast milk.

I checked a poll and 80% of people think this is gross. I must admit there is a part of me that is repulsed too. My scientific "geek" and curious side is intrigued and would want to try it... but then the repulsion kicks in again.

Why is this? Why are we repulsed at the though of drinking milk from our own species? Hell, we literally drank "butt loads" of the stuff when we were babies. So why are we more than happy to drink milk from cows and goats? Have you ever looked at the business end of a milk cow? Not pretty.

    Don't know.

Something to do with cannibalistic revulsion?

    The Oedipus complex?

    I don't know.

I read somewhere that humans are the only species that drinks milk from a different species, and drinks it well into adulthood.

    That's weird.

But I am a big advocate of breastfeeding for babies!!

    Not so with cheese-making............

    It tastes bad? ;-)

There is likely a relationship between toilet training and subsequent attitudes toward bathroom etiquette and this dynamic of weaning and taboo against mothers' milk. There is a similar early behavior modification, intimacy of body function, and later sense of prohibition.

The last scene in Grapes of Wrath comes to mind,

When the new mother that just lost her baby nurses/ feeds a starving man.

Just some random thoughts. . .

Did anyone see the episode of 'Weeds' in which Andy had to assist Nancy with her milk problem?

I don't like warm milk from any species, so I fought my curiosity of what human milk tastes like.

There was an older sister in my first congregation that shared a story of drinking horse milk, during her youth.

Get it cold and add some chocolate to it, and I'll drink it. . . probably. Just don't tell me what it is.

I would only drink it from the source. Once human milk is extracted and stored, it's not as good.

You would need to be on very good terms with the vendor before taking the plunge but Im sure it could be very enjoyable!

The thought of drinking breast milk from my own mother at this point is disgusting enough, but from an unrelated woman? I'm sure there is a lot of psychology going on here, but the fact is, its disgusting and I think society will always see it that way... except for the freaks who eat placentas and stuff like that.
