VOIDEATER- Good points you make. It's the consequences of actions that need to be prevented here, exactly. If BP, Transocean, ltd, & Haliburton had really done extreme safety checks and used the most protective ( although expensive ) equipment available - perhaps no disaster would have occured. But we've seen it here in America before with the space shuttle Challenger with defecient O-rings, etc, etc. A laundry list could be made on companies and organizations trying to increase profit while decreasing quality of product, equipment used, or safety procedures. Really sad
Our Southern Friends- Are you Pissed about the Oil Spill? I Know I Am ...... !

PS - oil companies do not buy leases they think of as worthless. Buying useless leases is not the point. Not developing leases they have was the questions. Unless I missed something.
Thanks Void, that is exactly the point.

I didn't read all the "left" and "right" sniping.
ALL AMERICANS use oil.
It makes me sick to see our beautiful Gulf Coast threatened. If you've never visited there, you should. Maybe I should say you should have. The land is pretty flat, the waves come in gently, the beaches are white (for now). It's beautiful (for now) and the people are friendly.
BP didn't plan for the "in case hit happens" scenario. I know nobody can predict explosions, but the thing is still gushing. They are probably crying more about that black gold being lost then the 11 men who died on that oilrig, and the price-tag of the spill. It's been gushing for 3 freaking weeks.

Thanks for all the takes and comments ! It seems most here are aware of the enormous dangers this spill has caused , some might not care because it isn't happening in THEIR OWN geographical location . I call that small mindedness and lack of human empathy.
Not the reason I'm not concerned. My lack of concern stems from the fact that tragedies happen every day, and we move on with life. Getting pissed off over a little spilled oil is not going to do anyone any good. Buying into the hype that this is some kind of unprecedented disaster won't help either. Here's what I'm confident of:
- steps will be taken to adress this happening in the future, because first and foremost, oil companies do not want to lose money on this sort of thing
- clean up will be done, and we will adapt
And that, my friends, is really all that matters.

Purps!!
What do you get when you put an oil man in the White House? How about when you put TWO in there!?

Doe, from what I've seen this isn't a "little oil spill" It's a freaking GUSHER that can't be contained. Think volcano of oil in our ocean.

Bunk. Despite the most stringent safety standards these things do happen. If you don't want oil spills in the ocean you should never ever drill there. A disaster like this will happen again - and has happened many many times in the past.

Well, one thing BP got right- there was an awful lot of oil at the bottom of that drill pipe- was, is the key word here.
A friend of mine in Indiana said he noticed the BP gas station near him was deserted, but the Shell gas station across the street was doing a lot of business. I guess customers are letting BP know that they don't like what happened.

Soooo, just buy gas at another station? Problem solved!!!
