The Pharmer-- The JW leaders would be right. I know you will say the holy spirit will teach you- so i ask you a question-please give me your answer from the holy spirit-- What is a 7 headed beast with 10 horns? Or a simpler one who is the two horned beast?

If the JW had to give a one-or-the-other answer, the WTS has the correct view.

Then he would probably elaborate. He would be sure that he could not be correct from just a scriptural passage without knowing all that the WTS knows about the rest of the Bible and how Holy Spirit guided the FDS (really the GB) to probably be unanimous in their understanding of the passage.

How can you ask a JW to disagree with the only men on planet earth who have a direct pipeline to God?

....even though God changes his mind every other friggin' day.... geez, he can't even get through a chapter of Isaiah or Jeremiah without threatening to annihilate the earth two or three times while in between promising to nurture the survivors when not even a cockroach can survive the crap that he threatens.

If you are not in yet... then your friend might not want to give you the answer, in fear that this would turn you away. You should be hooked and believing first, before you can be told that you won't be able to question the WT or think that you might have a better understanding on anything.

    That's my thought anyway.

    kjw53 (a JW?), you said:

The JW leaders would be right.

I observe how you were able to say who was right without actually knowing the content. Apart from your false assumptions regarding me (i.e. -don't make this something it isn't), thank you for your straight-forward answer.

I do have a specific question for you kjw53. If I read a passage of scripture and then conclude about it the same as the WT concludes, who then is correct?

Thanks again (for everyone's input) -- very helpful!

I really don't mean it to be a deep question; take it for what it is asking.

A quick answer would indicate subservience to the Watchtower. Something all Witnesses are always trying to convince themselves does not exist.

(btw tec, I'm not in. My JW friend wants me to examine things (esp. with my own beliefs) and to study with someone locally. I also have a Mormon friend who claims they are the True Church. Needless to say, my hands are full with examining my current beliefs, Mormonism, and WTBTS. Although I believe examining one's own beliefs is a continual and important process, I also realize that even if I find one of my current beliefs to be in err, it does not prove someone else's belief is true. In the end, I only want to hold on to what stands the tests. I'm open to being proven wrong about anything...I just wish it was easier to get straight-forward answers from people so this process of examining could be quicker.)

kjw53, I know it's easy to read the wrong tone into things that are typed, and I certainly don't want to offend. So to be clear, did you find my question somehow offensive (or is that just me reading the wrong tone into your 1st response)?

    Thanks again.

    Hi Pharmer,

Actually, it's not at all an easy question - and not just for JWs either. The world is full of "believers" who hold very, very fast to their religious beliefs even when face to face with seemingly contradictory evidence. Besides, even though you did not intend to do so, your question has a provocative quality to it (but, hey, any question whose intent is to get people to think is provocative!). On another level, I've got to ask you, Why is it so important for you to get your JW friends' views on something? Can't you just accept they've got their beliefs and leave it at that?

    the pharmer,

C.T. Russell stated that if someone were to read the Bible without the benefit of his writings to "help" them understand, they would be completely in darkness within 6 months. As far as I know, this belief hs not changed among the the powers that be at the WTS, be it Rutherford, Knorr, Franz or the subsequent Governing Bodies.

I think the question you asked would be easy for a JW to answer...you would be wrong and the WTS would be right if there was a conflict in understanding. If your understanding was the same, the WTS would still be correct...and you just happen to agree with it. A JW would also probably say if you did agree that it was because of the understanding you were given by the WTS!
