If Republicans are so sure they can win the vote, why do they keep passing laws making it hard for Democrats to vote?

LeavingWT: Has there been an epidemic of people showing up to vote only to find an imposter stole their vote? Just wondering. I haven't heard anything like that. So they have a list of voters, a person shows up and gives his name, they find it on the list, hand over a ballot and cross the name off. Someone comes in and gives the same name--does that happen?

Good questions. I would like to know the answers, myself.

To my knowledge, there is no epidemic. It's mostly commentators and politicians who speak about it. The most popular charge is that of dead people voting. Given the system, it would be easy for dead people to vote. One would only have to show up and give the name of someone in a recent obituary.

Still, we have no data to support such charges. The voter fraud convictions in the news are about people being paid to vote a certain way or ballot tampering.

When the Voter ID ballot initiative passes this November, we can see if the voting numbers dramatically change in future elections, when ID is required at the polling place. I don't expect anything dramatic, personally. Even if there is change, we won't know if it's from suppression or a lack of fraud.

Ah, there is something I haven't thought about. Possibly requiring some current mail would seriously cut this down (if it's even prevalent, and as you said, we really don't know). Does MS have new laws too? Forgive me if this is stereotyping, but the numbers I looked at recently show a lot of poverty. These new laws will affect the poor. It will be interesting to see if voting numbers in poorer districts are more affected.

Very telling Beks. We know it's an organized strategy, and now we are starting to see the seeds.

NewChapter: I got on Google and found this recent editorial. It sounds about right.

"Mississippi is voting on voter ID not so much to stop any perceived voter fraud, but mostly as a political tactic to bring people to the polls. It is a hot-button issue that motivates some voters and those voters most likely will also be motivated to vote for certain Republican candidates. If those supporting voter ID, including the Republican leadership of the Legislature, had wanted voter ID for voter ID's sake, it would already be law."

Recently, enough signatures were obtained on a petition, to place the Voter ID issue on the ballot. It's expected to pass in November. As you say, we'll have some hard numbers in coming years.

Ah, so the vote itself is an attempt to draw in more Republican voters. That's interesting.

In our state, we didnt' even get the option of petitioning. They've pulled back some because of some shaky extreme wording--which would require a full SS# at the polls. Our state driver's licenses and ID's no longer have our SS#'s on them. I guess they figured that wouldn't stand up to a court challenge. It again brings into question motive. Anyway if they clean it up and pass it, our option will then be to petition for a repeal vote. We did it with SB5 union busting bill, and got 5 times the needed signatures. I can understand why Ohio now wishes to suppress democratic vote. The droves that will turn out to repeal SB 5 is all the evidence they need that their political days are numbered.

Voter ID laws poll very well-an overwthelming majority support their enactment. Seems to me that it is out of mainstream hardcore progs that are the ones with issues.
