If Republicans are so sure they can win the vote, why do they keep passing laws making it hard for Democrats to vote?

Between 1997 and 2000 there were only 7 convictions on voter fraud

Prosecutors don't look for these law breakers and politicians don't want them to be found out. Motor voter laws in many states make it easy to register- so easy that even illegal immigrants register. I won't speculate on how they obtained the B.C. and SS card documents for a DL. How do we know that so many illegals are registering to vote? They get a jury summons and then check the box- not a US Citizen, when they send it back to the court. Obtaining a voter regstration card requires no documents in Florida- just fill out a form and mail it in- then the voter registration card can be used as one of the identity/address documents needed to obtain a drivers license- pretty neat trick. More information-

"In 2005, the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that up to 3 percent of the 30,000 individuals called for jury duty from voter registration rolls over a two-year period in just one U.S. district court were not U.S. citizens. While that may not seem like many, just 3 percent of registered voters would have been more than enough to provide the winning presidenĀtial vote margin in Florida in 2000. Indeed, the CenĀsus Bureau estimates that there are over a million illegal aliens in Florida, and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has prosecuted more non-citizen voting cases in Florida than in any other state."

That was during the Bush era. The Obama presidency has given many illegals unofficial sanctuary, under the guise of something called "prosecutorial discretion". Who thinks that illegals won't try to vote in the candidates who will give them their green card?

Moshe, thanks so much for your post. I really wanted to hear from the "other side" on this matter. I think our problem is that we have quit listening to each other---simply invalidating every concern before we even hear it.

I don't want non-citizens taking part in our democratic process. It's this principal that also makes me opposed to the super pac arrangement. I would be a hypocrite to dismiss this principal when it works against me. Sometimes I am a hypocrite, but I do try not to be.

I have to look into this. I'm trying to find some UNBIASED studies, but as you can imagine, in this climate it is difficult to find. But here are some of my immediate thoughts--subject to change with more information

The question of citizenship should not be handled at the polls. This is a registration issue. Since a birth certificate or similar documentation can prove citizenship, it is unreasonable to require a specific kind of ID at the polls. I guess what I'm saying is that by the time they are in the voting line, it's too late. If they REALLY want to prevent undocumented people from voting, the time to sift them out is at registration.

Most students can supply a birth certificate, but not necessarily the photo ID required by the state, since they no longer want to accept student ID's. Most elderly people can supply a social security number, but maybe not a card or a photo ID. It would probably also be balanced to allow older voters to simply be grandfathered in. Poor people also often have some kind of proof, especially since they have likely applied for public aid.

If the problem really exists, then lets solve it effectively without excluding valid voters. When I registered I had to provide my SS#. Since people voting under false names isn't really the issue, why do I also have to show a photo ID? If I'm not an American my social would have been flagged (I wouldn't have had one. I don't think the concern is that illegals are fabricating SS#s)

Elderly voters registered many years ago when they had all this documentation. What sense does it make to stop them at the polls and turn them away? If they've been voting all their lives, why is this suddenly an issue?

I question the motives behind these new laws. There are more effective ways to establish citizenship. Why would we want to weigh down poll workers with answering this question? Poll workers should be free to assume that if a person successfully registered they are legitimate voters.

If there is a problem let's attack it. But don't use it as a false face for a more sinister agenda.

There is no doubt that the motivation here is Republicans trying to prevent traditionally Democratic voters from voting. Just as it is painfully obvious why there is a rush of anti union activity in so many states that have Republican Governors.

I agree Beks. Perhaps the immigration issue is valid, but we know they are using it as window dressing. It's disturbing and flagrant. I think it is possible that the GOP is signing it's death warrant. It doesn't look good for them. Time will tell, but I believe thinking conservatives are saying WTF? They wanted jobs, they got voter Id laws, anti-sharia laws, abortion restrictions and papers please policies.

The Federal government has laid off or furloughed close to 89,000 employees this year. Are the Republicans ecstatic. Are the Republicans creating jobs in their Districts being the great Entrepreneurs they claim to be.

There is no doubt in my mind that the democrats around here are just as intent on packing in as many voters as they can - whether they have a right to vote or note. When you go to the polling place and find out that some one else as already voted for you, you will get an idea what some of us are concerned about. And if you mail in your vote, are you sure you know what happened to it?

When you go to the polling place and find out that some one else as already voted for you,

???? Have you had this happen to you? Is this happening? Has there been a rash of this type of lawlessness? Or is this another fox fabricated scary problem. I haven't heard of it. I'm not saying it has never happened, I just haven't heard of any major issues. If this is rampant, it really should be big news. Do you have some support?

Even if I walk in and vote at the poll, I can't be sure my vote counts. Remember how Bush stole the election with the uncounted Florida votes?

Not to mention the Diebold fiasco. And it was far more than uncounted votes in FL. It was pre election shenanigans, and post election SCOTUS usurping the will of the people.
