If Republicans are so sure they can win the vote, why do they keep passing laws making it hard for Democrats to vote?

The solution is not that hard. Other Democratic countries have solved this problem decades ago. Puhlease. In my native country, Costa Rica, EVERY citizen has a National ID card called a CEDULA. EVERY CITIZEN.

There. Problem solved. No matter where you live, you can vote, even in extremely rural, mountainous areas!!! Just keep your "cedula" current with your current residency, which should be made easy to do. And the "cedula" should be FREE!!!

I'm 1000000% sure Republicans would be 10000000% AGAINST this idea though. Wonder why!

I do not understand how requirement of a photo ID is a suppression of legitimate voting rights.

For sure, I have to show a photo ID for practically everything else involving government or business.

Bluesapphire, it was Republicans that enacted a US "CEDULA" in 2005. It was passed by a Republican Congress and signed by a Republican President. The REAL ID act would create national standards for state driver's license/IDs and mandate linked databases among the states and make them a national ID....a cedula.

James, have you read any of the explanations as to why this is suppression? Have you dismissed all of them? Not all photo ids are acceptable. Do you think ANY of the concerns are valid? If not, then you won't understand. That's fine. But I understand and I will continue to fight against voter suppression.

BTS, I will read your link. And I will look to see how easy they planned to make getting one of their "cedulas" would have been. I suspect if they made it cumbersome or cost money, it would be shot down in a heartbeat by Democrats. That's why I would shoot it down too

But if it was made easy, free and almost a someone standing at the Walmart type of thing to register for one, I would be ALL FOR IT!

NewChapter, a photo ID is necessary for practically any important public transaction in this country...driving a car, cashing a check, opening a bank account, getting a job, - too many to list, really.

It is a necessary step to avoid voter fraud.

Yes, it should be free (or at least cheap enough to be afforded by all) - but that is already true of state driver's licences or photo IDs - even welfare people seem to have one or the other of these.

Fighting against valid voter ID is fighting FOR VOTER FRAUD - pure and simple.

Nothin is pure and simple James. Had you seriously considered some of the problems these laws have stirred up, you would at least see the complexity behind it. I won't change your opinion, however I would appreciate that you not accuse me of fighting for voter fraud. I'm sure in your experience you don't see the problem. Some of us have widened our experience and considered the plight of people that don't have it as good as us.

As I said, the decision is ideological. I will not support disenfranchising voters even if they don't have a bank account or cash checks.

Requiring a valid photo ID has nothing to do with having a bank account or cashing checks. You need an ID to get a SNAP card (food stamps), for crying out loud. You can't take a dump without an ID these days. Everyone has one. Ideological? I guess preventing ineligible people from voting, or eligible people from going to vote repeatedly at multiple precincts is ideological? That's risible. Requiring ID at the polling place is just common freaking sense. You are just being obstinate.

In California a photo ID costs $20 bucks last time I checked. That's a lot of money for some folks. That's a problem.

Make it free. No problem. MAKE IT FREE!!!

Make it free - fine. Or, give people a voucher if they do not have a passport or driver's license.

But make a valid ID mandatory to vote, and control it so that you have to be an eligible U.S. citizen, and you cannot have multiple registrations.
