Nov.15th WT - WT Society Wants & Needs Elders- Not very High Standards

As many of us realize- times are hard for the WT society getting men to " reach out " for an elders or ministerial servants position as young men aged ( 18-35 ) are opting out of doing that due to the pressure they are under from the WT society leaders and just that it takes up too much valuable time where men could be earning a living and helping their own families instead of a thankless magazine printing corporation. In the article " Train Others To Reach Out " in this issue it has lots of strange, controlling, yet perplexing statements which I'm sure will confuse JW men who are considering " reaching out ". In fact, I think this article will DISCOURAGE more than encourage them from doing so.

On pg. 28 paragraph 3 it states, " Men do not automatically qualify for privileges in the congregation. MERE SECULAR EDUCATION or LIFE EXPERIENCE does NOT prepare a man for this kind of work . ( Boy, have they got that right ) To serve properly in such a capacity , a man must qualify spiritually. More than ABILITIES or ACCOMPLISHMENTS , he must have spiritual qualities. " Translation : You can be as dumb as a rock and serve as an elder or MS if you meet WT society's " spiritual " requirements. Education is not important, life experience not important, your abilities & accomplishments don't matter. Just do as we the WT society says- then you are " spiritual ".

So what does the WT say would consitute " spiritual " requirements ? Notice pg. 30, paragraph 10, it states, " Spiritual instruction begins when a man accepts a Bible study. We may need to HELP HIM TO READ WELL. Our assistance continues as we conduct Bible studies with him. When he starts to atend Christian meetings regularly, his spiritual training will progress as he participates in the Theocratic Ministry School , becomes an unbaptized publisher , and so forth. After baptism, his training can include such things as HELPING WITH KINGDOM HALL MAINTENANCE . In time, a brother can be helped to see what he needs to do to qualify as a ministerial servant. " Translation : If a JW man just performs these functions , gives talks, goes out knocking on doors , and cleans toilets at the Kingdom hall - he's a " spiritual person " ! Yippee ! So now he's qualified to counsel families with life or death situations and marital problems ?? Whatever happened to the alleged " fruitages of the spirit " ? Like developing love, kindness, mildness, self control, etc ? It's because in the WT society's eyes - THOSE qualities don't matter - what matters is obeying the " functions " that the WT society sets into place - meetings, service, cleaning Kingdom hall toilets . THOSE things make a man spiritual !!

Now notice this fantasy statement about how elders will help men to " reach out " in a personal way. They try to make this sound as if elders have JW men's backs and will really help them. On paragraph 5 it states, " Like Jesus, Christian elders today befriend and help others. They cultivate a warm, close relationship with their fellow believers by taking time to show personal interest in them. While elders recognize the importance of confidentiality , they are not secretive . ( Really ? Then why aren't JW's told why they are being asked to attend JC meetings beforehand ? ) Elders trust their brothers and share with them Scriptural truths they themselves have learned. By no means do elders treat as inferior a ministerial servant who may be comparitively young. Instead , they think of him as a spiritual man with potential who is performing a valuable service ( functions , once again ) in behalf of the congregation. " Translation : This is the WT society trying to schmooze it over with potential " brothers " reaching out for MS or elder positions. They are trying to tell them that the elders are looking out for their best interests, will treat them with respect ( which many times didn't happen ) and won't look down on them as young and inexperienced - which many times DID happen. But hey- WT society has to put a good foot forward to make it SEEM like elders will pay attention to you in a personal way- when many times THAT doesn't happen either. Kind of makes me want to gag with what I SAW actually happen- as compared with what they are SAYING happens. Sigh.

Later on in the article it mentions that elders may need to " readjust " or " counsel " a JW man because of some " personality trait " or if a brother seems " self sparing " or if a brother seems " ambitious " or is " seeking prominence " . O.K. Well fine , I get that. But my question is : Who counsels or corrects the elders showing these same tendencies ? Or does it just slip through the cracks if an elder is dominating everybody ? In my 44 years inside the Witnesses , the latter was usually true.

So- It looks like the WT society is desperate for more men to be elders and ministerial servants - but from the look of it, the standards are low and JW men can expect to be counseled constantly and come under intense scrutiny if they want to serve in one of these elite so-called " privileges ". No thanks. I gave almost half a century to this organization. I'm much happier out of it ! So what did you folks notice when you were attending JW meetings about elders / men / publisher relationships ? Or any other comments you have regarding this article would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks for your takes and observations . Hope you are all doing well tonight. Peace out to all of you. Mr. Flipper

"Spiritual instruction begins when a man accepts a Bible study. We may need to HELP HIM TO READ WELL...."

In fact, they would prefer that he not be able to read TOO well... As in "speed reading" - because then he might have enough time to read OTHER information and actually sit and THINK about it...

    Oh, crud...

With that sort of "filter" in place, the congregations are going to end up with men focused on superficial appearances and playing the part, rather than people - men -who are actually interested in the spiritual - and emotional - health of the "sheep"...

Well... Even more so than today, if that can be imagined...

I foresee this situation driving yet more Jehovah's Witnesses out of the religion... And yet more pedophiles being considered for a position in the congregation...

This could turn out to be a GOOD thing, in exposing the Watchtower Corporation to yet more successful lawsuits...

But then, I'm jes' a lil' ol' She-Devil...

    Dear brothers,

Flipper and I want to reach out to be elders again. We really miss taking the lead in field circus. We miss giving parts on how to sell magazines. We miss pointless long meetings....etc....etc.....etc.

Even though Flipper is the smarter one, I am better lookin. We both really really want to have our whole self worth as males judged by Circuit Overseers and such.

Please let us know when our appointments will be announced.

MS Qualifications: Fog a mirror; report 8.5 hours riding around in field service; enjoy ass-kissing the elders; pioneer during 30-hour aux pio special campaigns

Elder Qualifications: Fog a mirror (tho some older ones may not be able to anymore); report 8.5 hours riding around in field service; enjoy ass-kissing the CO; pioneer during 30-hour aux pio special compaigns; spread a little "green" around when the CO/DO are in town

Disqualifications: Ask any difficult questions about prophecy or chronology; get tired of kissing asses; get caught getting drunk (unless it's with other elders); piss off CO

It's easy to gloss over these articles and be left with the feeling that something is seriously wrong in their way of thinking and you hit the nail right on the head when you said "Whatever happened to the alleged " fruitages of the spirit " ? Like developing love, kindness, mildness, self control, etc ?". This is and should be their main ambition and the elders should be looking at ways to cultivate them. The elders should be identifying these signs in any prospective appointment.

I guess to pool they have to pick from is getting smaller so just dumb down the qualifications.

Flipper really nailed it, but it got me thinking too. Here's my take on the thing:

    Spiritual Qualities:

    - Must have Unquestioning Obedience to the dictates of the GB as expressed in the WT, even when following it is contrary to your own self interest

    - If and when those dictates change you will not question that either. It is "New Light" from Jehovah and it is wonderful in our eyes

    - A willingness to do menial labor for free: sweep, mop, clean toliets, etc.

    - Regular meeting attendance

    - Regular presence in the "Door-to-door" ministry:

This means: Be out at least 3 out of every 4 weekends with a total of at least as many hours per month as either the "National Average" or the "Congregation Average"; whichever is higher is better, but it the local BOE is desperate they'll go with the lower number.

    - Effectiveness in the ministry is not relevant. It is not even a consideration, in fact there is not even any attempt to measure it.

    - When presenting meeting parts or answering questions at the WT "Study" it is imperative to quote the Society's current thoughts precisely. Paraphrasing is discouraged.

    - You must "Reach Out" for privileges, but this must never be done in an "ambitious" way "seeking prominence" for yourself

    Peace out, 00DAD

    wha happened?

I suppose the call is going out but you would have to be completly ignorant of the news. How many times, in recent history, has the society shown that they will not back elders in court. The recent case in Murrieta shows how a judge was able to compel elders to answer questions. The clerical privilidge cannot be envoked to protect the conversations in a JC. I know of one elder who had to go to court, by himself, without representation from the society because, a person who was disrupting meetings, sued the congregation for getting thrown out. They didn't send anyone to help the elder out.

Honestly taking on that responsibility without any protection from liability is just a suckers bet. It's just going to net the worst kind of elder. Some marginally educated individual with little to no people skills is what they get out of it.

Yes, Wha Happened, I have seen that very thing happen with an Elder that I know well.

I attend a congregation that has over 13 deleted Elders. There are 7 serving Elders that remain. It is a wealthy congregation as well.

I would have to say that the 13 deleted Elders would be the ones I would feel comfortable in approaching for counsel, and advice. They are also much happier, and their families for the most part are doing well. They have a lot of weight off their shoulders.
