question: what does it mean to "fog a mirror" --- meaning anyone w/a heartbeat and breath still in them?

    xelder: funny!

w/tower must still be filling up halls to need elders.

ZIDDINA- Exactly. The WT society wants to dumb down men and women in the Witnesses to keep them from discovering WT skeletons in the closet. The bar set for choosing elders and MS's is very low. Character doesn't matter in picking elders - being superficial IS important to protect the WT society's interests and you are right- it produces aloof elders who don't really care or give a rat's a$$ about the personal interests of rank & file Witnesses. It's a dangerous situation which like you said has resulted in pedophiles being appointed as elders or MS's. I doubt it will change anytime soon, if ever. Very sad.

XELDER- I love your satire type view of this article. Really funny ! I don't think I'm smarter than you ( perhaps better looking just teasing ! ) however if I ever try to go back to meetings or reach out for elder or a MS position- I give you my permission to shoot me, O.K. ?

DESIROUSOFCHANGE- I agree- a$$ kissing is one of the most important requirements in order to be a elder or MS. I was never good at doing that- thus I only stayed a MS 6 years, didn't even BOTHER reaching out for elder. Very true what you say : asking questions or doubting WT prophecy or teachings is a definite disqualification to be appointed. Or disagreeing with the C.O. or body of elders even. It's ridiculous.

LISTENER- It's very telling, isn't it when an organization appoints men to positions of authority and calling them " spiritual men " based on functions or " spiritual " because they clean Kingdom hall toilets ? Something definitely is wrong with this picture. It's called ignoring REAL qualities like love, kindness, compassion in men. Those things don't matter to the WT society leaders. Only obedience matters. Not good humane qualities in people

A nice deconstruction of this article!

Yes, they are DESPERATE for 'brothers' for sure! After the last CO visit, an elder asked me if could open the next meeting w/prayer. This after not commenting for over a year now, not in the school for YEARS, stepping down from being an elder YEARS ago, and minimal to nonexistant FS!

If I'm the kind of bro you want opening the meeting with prayer, you are indeed DESPERATE!

(I've managed to get out of the prayer assignment so far)

None of the elders in the cong I last attended had any real concern for the sheep. They are exactly as you describe Mr. Flipper.

KARTER- Indeed the pool to choose from is getting smaller, thus WT society dumbs down the qualifications.

00DAD- Good points you bring up for sure. Unquestioning obedience even if the WT society's teachings change and it's to your personal detriment. It's considered " new light " - required to follow it. Cleaning toilets, restrooms, menial labor are all expected to be done free of charge. Also as you stated a BIG no-no to answer questions with your own thoughts at WT studies. God forbid JW's give their own thoughts - they might use their own minds and that would be dangerous to the WT society's control plans.

WHA HAPPENED ? - You make some awesome points ! A man would have to be insane to reach out for an elder's position these days as the WT society will definitely throw them under the bus in any court proceedings involving child abuse or even the case you mentioned about disrupting meetings. The WT society keeps trying to seperate itself from actual proceedings within congregations that elders deal with. I mean- even when a person is reinstated - it is just done between the congregation that DFed a person and the congregation reinstating the person - no communication with the WT society is done anymore on DF cases. Any man trying to be an elder is really setting himself up for legal liability and a very slippery slope for sure !

QUARTERBACK- I'm glad to hear that 13 elders got deleted in your congregations. Perhaps some of these guys are getting smart and not wanting the hassle and stress of serving anymore. I hope more elders continue to stop serving and the WT society will run out of people to serve as elders.

    FACTFINDER- Thanks !

LV101- Good question. I guess fogging a mirror would be somebody still breathing ! LOL ! I'm sure kingdom halls are filling up more in developing countries, but I've heard that attendances are down in Kingdom halls in the United States though. Hope it keeps going down

    DGP- Thanks for bookmarking.

BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS- Thanks. So you got asked to give a prayer at a meeting in spite of not commenting or being in the TM school for years , and not having gone in field service much at all ? Very interesting. It shows they really ARE desperate to try to get JW men to " reach out ". I'm glad to hear you have escaped the " prayer assignment " so far. Keep the good work up !

FACTFINDER- Indeed what you say is true. I saw this for many of the 44 years I was a Witness that elders just didn't care in a real, authentic way about the personal interests of JW's in their congregations. If a person wasn't a regular meeting attender- it would be weeks or months on end before anybody noticed , if ever. Really a sad situation

Showing "spirituality" in this organisation has always meant two things: fully complying with the directions coming from the hierarchy and getting your hours in. I knew elders who did that trick of doing an RV before the field service group just so they could get the clock ticking. One elder told me -- back when it seemed as though becoming an MS again was a possibility -- that I just needed to find a Bible study to boost my hours so I could qualify.

It didn't matter what research I did, or the answers I gave at meetings, or how many visits I made to RVs to teach them the troof. It didn't matter about what sort of husband or father I was, or how I tried to be a decent bloke.

It was all about the numbers on the field service slip I popped in the slot at the end of each month.

The Watchtower is a publishing company - an information company. The more information they can provide and the more people who will pay for it, the better the company. So, the WTS rewards men based on their ability to try to resell their ideas and literature. I mean, the dog catcher or tax collector's boss had to be the best dog catcher or tax collector at some time. It's how one gets promoted.

In my KH, we had as elders - a doctor and a few busienssmen with their own businesses. There was a humble man who lived in a new double wide with his wife and daughter. He was swell, and his daughter was a peach. He wasn't an elder, but was reaching out.

There was another man who was rumored to be a wife beater and drinker. He had many kids. The elders didn't promote him at all. Good thing.

When I left, young men were being given MS spots in their early 20s. I know one who left, rather be out sowing his oats. Wonder what happened to him.
