I like movies that make you scared based off of atmosphere that the movie creates and not just "guy pops out and makes a loud noise" scares.
The Shining is a classic.
Jacob's Ladder is a very freaky movie.
The Thing (John Carpenter's). This one has the best "something pops out and scares you" moment ever. If you've seen it, you already know which scene I'm talking about.
1408. Starts off awesome but the last 20 minutes or so are a little... meh.
Remake of The Hills Have Eyes was actually not that bad.
The Descent. A lot of people hated it but I loved the claustrophic feel the movie gives you and also the lack of lighting.
In the Mouth of Madness. Creepy creepy creepy... The scene with the guy on the bike. I still don't like driving down long and dark roads because of that movie.
The Mist is not too bad. The ending will probably stick with you.
Session 9 is another creepy movie.
28 Days Later. I don't know anybody who doesn't like it.
Yes, "The Mist" is excellent. Not to be confused with "The Fog".
Hocus Pocus - (not too scary!)
Stephen King's " IT " with Tim Curry playing Pennywise the Clown....scared the pee pee out of me a number of years ago.

And we musn't forget....
My favorites ( the ones I can recall) are
the Amityville Horror
The Ring
The Gift
Wait Until Dark
The Exorcist
When a Stranger calls
The Blair Witch Project
Carie
the omen
the haunting
Silence of the Lamb
psycho
No country for old men( I know not typical horror movie, but the bad guy was really frighting and his face and eyes and that hair cut are just creepy.
No Country For Old Men is a good creep fest.
