"thowing the baby out with the bath water" I have seen being used when someone throws EVERYTHING out asif it were all non applicable any more. S&R you say the Egyptians knew "do unto other?" May I please have a reference for it? It sounds interesting.

Namely the wisdom and the prophesy has to go also because you hate it so much.

Science will someday say that prophesying is possible for some people. Why does prophesy look muddled? One reason is if enough people listen to the warning the inevitable conclusion will become tampered. The other reason why is because the sight of something ahead causes in some people exagerated emotion and personal aim. (As in the Watchtower Society)

That is why I talk about the generic spirit on forum. There exists spirit (baby) and real time (baby).

The water pictures what we can do to make a better world. Christ (whether he is divine or purely human like us) is the pinnacle of wisdom and future sightedness.

Qcmbr were you Mormon and JW?

Take me as an example. When I first started posting on forum I did not come timidly but went bull like into my theories. People did not like it. Even though I have tamed my posts quite a bit, those same people who did not like what I said don't read my posts anymore or read them with prejudice.

Ancient Hebrew wisdom has disappointed many people and seemingly spoiled their lives. So now if anything remotely sounds reflective of that wisdom, they shut down or take out their weapons for fighting! I like to fight. I'm sorry!

LOL!! I haven't read this thread yet, but I just need to say: YOU HAVE FOUND MY PERSONAL FAVORITE PET PEEVE. I can no longer count how many times the baby/bathwater thing has been used on me. It's quite the arrogant little cliche----but where is the originality??? I have begged, BEGGED, believers to come up with a new and clever metaphor. I've even made some suggestions---but I don't think they liked them much. Kind of like: Don't throw away the rotted fruit with the garbage.

Last night Bill Maher did his new rules. He insists that people stop referring to Atheism as a religion. He says that atheism is a much a religion as abstinence is a sexual position. I thought that was quite clever, and far superior baby/bathwater. Perhaps we can get Bill Maher to come up with a new cliche for that.

Also, images of babies being thrown to the ground in dirty bathwater disturb me. Since no longer reading the bible, dead babies make me sad.

And that's exactly why that expression is used!^^^ it appeals to emotion rather than reason.

I actually asked myself the baby/bathwater question in my deconversion process, and came to the conclusion it was all bathwater. There is no baby.

Its very comforting for believers to think that atheists haven't really thought it through properly.

I have been having a debate with a christian about godless morality and he insists that my objection to OT rape, kidnap, slavery and genocide is just an emotional reaction. If they allow themselves to consider that somebody who used to be just like them actually examined the evidence and found it wanting their position becomes fragile.

If you ever manage to break through the "baby & bathwater" defense it will quickly be followed by failsafe "No True Scotsman" fallacy of "you never were a REAL believer like me". I have had that one more times than I can remember.

I do not understand how being honest about human weakness and waywardness is an example of NO belief in the spirit of wisdom and truth. It is a perfect example of throwing away the silver spoons with the dirty dishes.

Would you rather that sin be hidden?

Some people just don't have it (faith). Some do. What we DO reflects what is within us, regardless of faith or no faith. Some athiests are more compassionate than some theists; and vice versa.

I find, however, that it is just as comforting (and common) for an atheists to think that a believers is afraid to let go, and so has not thought things through properly as well.

Theists do not do anything atheists do not also do, when it comes to generalizing and pigeon-holing the other 'side'.

    silver spoons/dishes. FINALLY something new.

ND---that would be a good point if these were only accounts of human weakness. But let's look at the god portrayed. Ethnic Cleansing----of all. Men. Women, Children, Babies. It all equals dead babies.

Would you say they were simply reporting on the weakness and brutality of their god? Simply being honest? I agree.
