    From the 11/22 1983 Awake!

Early in 1970 my cousin Larry began speaking to me about the Bible. What he had to say was interesting. I had heard something of the Bible’s message from his father, my uncle. Back in 1966 I had also attended some meetings at a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. When Larry told me that the present world system of things will soon be brought to an end, I thought he had “flipped out.” “Would I like to study the Bible with him?” I accepted out of curiosity. We studied several times and I attended some meetings at the Kingdom Hall, but I found it easier to slide along with the system. So I quit studying.

Some friends and I decided to hitchhike up the California coast road toward Mendocino. And while waiting for a ride on one part of the road, one of the fellows with whom I was traveling found an Awake! magazine in a ditch on the side of the road. Since he knew that I had studied with the Witnesses, he gave it to me. The magazine had an eye-catching title , “Is It Later Than You Think?” I looked at it for a few moments, reflecting on what my cousin had told me, and then threw it in my bag. When I arrived back home I put the magazine on my dresser, but it soon fell behind and was forgotten.

Some time later, we bought a kilo of marijuana and to celebrate we decided to bake a cake—with marijuana as the main ingredient. That morning we ate so much of the cake that we all got sick. Later we set out to clean up the house. While sweeping, I moved my dresser and what should fall out from behind but that Awake! When I saw that title again, it gave me a real jolt! It happened to be Sunday, so I decided to go to the Kingdom Hall and attend the meeting. For some weeks thereafter I continued attending the meetings and one of the Witnesses studied with me.

    From the 1/22 1997 Awake!

    *** g971/22p.24“WhenIAmWeak,ThenIAmPowerful”***

One evening my husband and I were discussing how there had to be more to life than eating and sleeping and working so hard. We started searching for the spirituality that was missing in our lives. We turned our attention to a little church down the street, but we did not find the spiritual uplift we had hoped for. The church members talked mostly about their local problems.

The Witness who brought the magazines had been coming by for about a year, but my routine did not change until I finally read the October 8, 1968, issue of Awake!, entitled “Is It Later Than You Think?” I liked what I read, and happily, it affected my husband in the same way. We began studying and absorbing the truth like sponges. We couldn’t get enough of all the wonderful things we were learning. In 1969 we were baptized.

Isn't this interesting? A District Assembly talk from 1949 with a slight variation.

Five such assemblies were held under the oversight of the British Branch office, at Blackpool, Brighton, Dundee, Belfast and Leicester. From the industrial centers of the north of England the witnesses trekked to the seashore and Blackpool, for the district assembly there June 10-12. So thoroughly did the intensive advertising of the public talk “ It Is Later than You Think!” catch on that when the prime minister was late to a social function one of the waiters remarked: “Someone should tell him that it is later than he thinks.” Saturday sessions were attended by 3,100, on Sunday 6,000 turned out for the public talk, and 177 were immersed.

Hmmm…from “It Is!” to “Is It?”

I can hear the talk in my head now: (read slow with long pauses)

"is it later than you think? that question was asked back in 1968 on the cover of the Awake. About that time many of our brothers fell away after placing undue importance on 1975. Was 1975 later than they expected?

How about you? Will you be like these weak, faithless ones who sought to serve their own selfish interests and use Satan's world to the full? Where are these ones today? While many of those that fell away recognized the folly of their ways and returned to Jehovah's true organization, sadly others did not, and have even passed on from this earthly life outside of God's love.

Will you be like these ones, who foolishly abandoned Jehovah to follow Satan and side with his world to live out a materialistic, debaucherous life style of greed and immorality? Or do you appreciate God's channel for sprititual truths in these last days? Do you humble yourself and accept what the F&DS is telling you?"

Dam.... I should write this shit for WTS, I could do this shit all day!

pharmer offers something great to the conversation. It appears that they just recycle because they stick to the stuff that has always worked for them.

Third time around.........I can just imagine the boys on the G B saying...."Do you think that anyone will notice?....Nah! lets do it

I think the intent of this is to provoke apostates and then claim persecution or that the Great Tribulation has finally arrived...

this is what a lot of tired JWs really want to hear right now... it's all about "supply and demand"...

Fred Franz was the WTS' idea man.

Most of his ideas were wrong, but at least he had some.

What new idea has the GB come up with since Fred Franz died, other than the "overlapping generations"?

flipper: The turnover of people always changing in this organization is incredible. Most of the newbie JW's that have come into the Witnesses since 1980 are probably NOT aware of failed predictions by the WT society .

So let me get this straight! The WT can recycle titles and themes for talks, conventions and magazine articles because, even though the current generation of JWs overlaps with the previous generation, they are completely different people!

That makes perfect sense! Why didn't I see it before? Thanks Mr. Flipper for straightening me out.

    Here's a nice fish for you ...
