I am NOT a fan of the Princess Di,,, but it's clear that she was 'an inconvenient woman'.

Band. The problem is party politics. And to be honest the best form of government can be paralysed government. They are always wanting to 'do something' when doing nothing is sometimes the best option. Paralysis is also a sign of rubbish politicians or one side that is just out there. Constitutional monarchy does not stop this happening. And that monarchy does not in any case have to be hereditary to work. There are many examples (Mary Robinson in Ireland I believe is a good example) of largely powerless presidents that are extremely popular.

Ok I haven't read the whole thread so...
Yes the Queen is the head of the Commonwealth. This was a yound woman who from the tiem her father became King had her future mapped out for her. Saying No wasn't really an option after her uncle abdicated. She has devoted jher whole life to being a figurehead.
I have to wonder how much of the economy is dependant on tourism for those who want to see the Queen or the palaces. How much does the royal family do regarding fund-raising for who knows how many causes.
She has no life except what was destined for her. Yes she has a dysfunctional family. Who wouldn't considering the fishbowl they live in and the family histories. She is a product of her generation. How many women her age aren't?
I have this sneaking suspicion that after William is married for a couple of years and maybe a kid or 2 the Queen will step down and pass Charlie over as King and skip right over to Wills. I don't think too many would mind skipping over Charles. As a tourism draw they are at teh top of the list and he isn't even king yet.
And yes it cost Canada $$$ when they visitied last year. But the money rolled in where ever they went The crowds were there with thier money hoping for a chance to say they saw the future king. This year when Charles came - not so much.

We take the Holocaust quite seriously, don't you?
talesin I won't even dignify that stupidity with an answer.
Three times I said "don't confuse parody with sympathy". You have yet to reply. Harry is an officer in the British Army he is not a Nazi sympathiser.
As for Diana's death it sounds as if you are getting your information from "National Enquirer". Its not murky and we do know what happened.
Instead of making vague unsubstantiated accusations please tell us the big picture. Who wanted her dead, who was in on it and how was it carried out?

Oh, please! And call me stupid,,, yah, that is real nice. Way to promote a discussion ... NOT!
A royal prince is stupid enough to dress as a Nazi?
So, he's in the military ... so what? I know plenty of navy guys who are prejudiced, and whatever ... that is no yardstick by which we measure our humanity.
And as far as the Diana-death thing goes, it was just an 'aside' .... Yes, she was an 'inconvenient woman',, and who are we to decide whether she was gotten rid of, or not?
stop being so naive!

Cofty. I know your son is in the armed forces. I am sure they could get around a retired General just as well. Or a non-political head of state. I have to admit I'm not a big fan of the armed forces as currently configured and some of the recruitment adverts I find frankly scary. I would bring back national service and ensure we are fully capable of defending ourselves and stop going off and fighting other people's wars. But that is so off topic I will shut up.

Lady Lee. Most of your comment shows the human reasons why no one personally should have this role thrust upon them. But having said that I don't feel that sorry for her. She has had a better life than most. By the way, there is no mechanism to pass over Charles. And if you look at Charles at age 30 I think you would find he had not managed to piss too many people off. Give William time.

talesin - I did not call you stupid, I said your comment was stupid when you asked " We take the Holocaust quite seriously, don't you?"
As for promoting discussion are you even bothering to read anything? I just posted my main argument for monarchy and you ignored every word.
You have the audacity to call me naive becasue I don't believe your crazy Diana conspiracy theory. Who is naive, the person who buys into a conpiracy theory or the person who rejects it for lack of credible evidence.
I asked you to outline your conspiracy theory - still waiting. I suspect it was just some dirt you thought you could throw with impunity wasn't it?
So now if actually want a discussion as opposed to a public platform to rant please go back and read my post 4297 and share your considered opinions on the issues I raised.

cofty - I suggest you take a pill, because you are in need of some relaxation .... any teenager who glorifies the nazis would be considered to be someone needing either serious mental help or an education,,,, at least in our society.
god, man, get over it.... no, I don't know why Diana died,,,, I just think it's suspicious,,, and YES, I am tired of paying money to the monarchy, who does NOTHING to better this world!
lol!

Oh, and by the way,,, SAYING my comment was stupid, is rude, and implies I am stupid. If you want to be taken seriously, I suggest you refrain from making such personally downgrading comments.
