“Well, Marvin, at one time in history the most educated individuals on the planet were convinced that....the world is flat, and they spoke extensively about it.”
AndDontCallMeShirley,
And there were others who disagreed and dared voice a view beyond the preapproved. I’m glad that, ultimately, both got to voice themselves. Society grew a bit as a result.
“I imagine all the "Marvin Shilmers" listening to them were equally as awed by their "academic" thinking as you are about this kid.”
“Just because someone has a fancy label pasted on them doesn't automatically mean everything they say is worth absorbing as sage advice.”
I’ve not suggested what the high school valedictorian said is sage advice. That you think so demonstrates you’ve not heard (read: understood) a word I’ve said.
And, finally, learn what ad hominem is before you accuse others of it.

I'm fully aware of what "ad hominem" means, Marvin.
I was referencing jabs you took at me like this one:
You probably don’t understand the difference. Probably—because of your little brain
I believe that is classic ad hominem.
And immature.
You claim you are open to hearing both sides of any issue, but you've roundly castigated anyone on this topic who has expressed a view different than your own.
Another word you may want to look up is "hypocrisy".

Marvin: I'm getting incredibly tired and annoyed at you disrupting thread after thread with the same "you didn't read what I said" anti-argument.
It stops, now.

Simple fact: all he did was recite a prayer, hardly revolutionary and if that is the "best and brightest" in the school then I think it says a lot about the quality of the school. For someone to stand up supposedly representing acedemic accomplishment and spew out 2,000 year old superstitious mantra is a disgrace.
The fact that there are then so many cheerleaders for this crap fawning over the 'accomplishment' just makes the whole thing worse.
As has been rightly pointed out - if he'd recited a different religions prayer then the same people would now be up in arms and outraged and demanding a blood sacrifice.
The only stable and sensible viewpoint is held by atheists - religious crap like that is out of place and unwelcome at such an event and it just reeks of populism instead of a desire for advancement of knowledge.

If he'd stood up and recited a "Soliloquy to the Sphagetti Monster" would that have been as 'awesome'?
If anything it would demonstrate free-speech even more than the lords prayer which is rather old and worn-out now.
Take it further ... what if he'd just gibbered nonsense? Would that be better? Yeah ... stick it to the man!! Free speech, wohoo !!!
Oh wait, he did just gibber nonsense ... why would anyone want to applaud that?

Simon,
Until you change your forum guideline policies I don’t see what’s wrong with pointing out misrepresentations of what’s said in the way of false assertions.
So, what do you suggest I do when a participant here misrepresents what I’ve said saying I’ve stated/claimed that “we should listen and agree with” anything a valedictorian has to say?
Please do give your recommendation.

“I believe that is classic ad hominem.”
AndDontCallMeShirley,
It’s not.
Learn about it.
It’s not ad hominem to point out poor thought process at work.
- I’ve not asserted your poor thought process as a justification for rejecting the errant things you’ve asserted of my statements.
- I’ve not asserted your poor thought process as reason to persuade someone from accepting your misrepresentation of my statements.
- I’ve circled your misrepresentations for what they are and opined that I can think of only two reason for your error: ignorance or dishonesty.

Simon,
It’s never a disgrace to share honest views. Ever.
When someone works hard to accomplish a monumental feat I want to know what compelled them to be who and what they are to that point in their life. What they share I may agree or disagree with. But I want to know regardless.
When someone works hard to accomplish a monumental feat the last thing I want to know is what someone else approved for them to say to me.

Marvin:
10. Posting an off-topic comment.
You have been warned not to disrupt threads with off-topic issues.
People can always mis-interpret whether accidentally or intentionally. Communicating using clear language helps avoid the former while revealing the latter.
My recommendation is to stick to the topic and clarify what you mean, not go off trying to debate how the debate should be conducted.
