Latinthunder I made that point about 'before' the big bang myself, it is a nonsensical term according to our latest evidence and intepretaion.
As to whether it matters or not...asking questions in science cures canccer and powers your computer, yes these questions matter. Finding atoms and electrons brought us electricity and microchips, goodness knows what the work of the LHC will bring to mankins as they hunt for the higgs boson particles and pursue answers in early universe physics.
If the question does not intregue you that is fine, but many humans want to know, we can use this knowledge to our advantage, it is far from irrelevant. I often think of all those hours wasted researching and examining questions in WT literature, compared to the big questions in the universe, what an utter waste of time and what utter irrelevant garbage.... what does the clay feet mean? Why was the tree banded? What do potiphers dreams mean for us today? Arrghhh man !!!!!! What a waste of time and energy in comparison, as is "who won last nights game?" or "what happened on coronation street?"
how do we know we haven't had this conversation an infinite amount of times?
Is there a reason to think we have? Are you going off evidence or just thrpwing random ideas out there? I could ask how do you know we are having this conversation? Without basic principles accepted and using the scientific method we would make no progress, the evidence suggests as we have sai about time and space. Also to be a bit smart arse, the multi dimension theories would not mean that we had this conversation over and over just that it could happen elsewhere in various formats, as for the universe playing out several times over in the exact same way, if that is what you meant... well scientists poder this idea of randomness or non randomness. I assume you have heard of string theory? String theory looks like it has potential to be true, it introduces the idea of vibrating strings being the foundation of all matter, vibraing randomly but under constraint. This means of randomness being available every universe on its repeated cycle woulfd be different, so again we would not have had this conversation over and over....
Either way even if we had had this conversation multiple times, what is your point buddy? Time is still affected by gravity etc and interwoven with space and initiated at the big bang and will end on the universe's demise...... it appears at the moment....
The point I was making about Life was related to a preconception many have about non believers:
Life to a non believers is a one off deal = precious
It is easily taken from us , 150,000 people die a day on earth = fragile
We live on a pale blue dot on the edge of a galaxy surrounded by nothingness on a planet undegoing cast changes with a history of mass extinctions of life, 99.9% of all species on earth that have existed are now extinct. We are in a universe that we don't live long enough to appreciare or explore and i can wipe us out with a stray rock any moment..... I used this term for it's actual meaning = insignificant
But this perspective means we respect life too, many christians argue that without god there is no value in life, but I feel more now as an atheist as I see every day and every passing moment as iredeemable and spent.
As for life being precious because it is life.... I obviously agree, but life is just functioning molecules, we as humans have made living things in a lab. for me what makes it valuble is what makes anything valuble, it being rare and irreplacable..... we are so ery fortunate to even be here tonight/today talking like this...
