Why say Jehovah anymore?

I guess I see your point. Really, why do I need to use any name when I pray? It's probably a personal hang-up. I spend hours naming my dogs. If it gets hit by a car early in life, I'm usually pissed off 'cuz I wasted a really cool name on a now-dead animal (I think reusing dog names is TACKY!)

You're right - they don't know him as I do, but that's THEIR problem.

From what I read, it is not the Watchtower Society that gave us the name "Jehovah," but rather a Catholic Dominican monk, Raymundo Martini in his book Pugio Fidei ("Dagger of Faith"). The book was
written in Latin, not English. But the name was adopted by the
translators of the King James and subsequent other Bibles.

Imagine, the Watchtower got the name from the Catholics! And they say the Catholics are all bad!

The date of that book is A.D. 1278.

Good discussion Bang. I remember well the times when, shortly after leaving, and having studied up on the merits of using the name "Jehovah", I would go to pray using my standard opening, and then stammer and say..."...uh, er.., I guess that's not really your name, is it? Uh...uhmmm...God, please...."

Once I knew the history, it seemed wrong to use it. I remember some "worldly" friends telling me "whatever, I'm sure god doesn't care", but to me, once I knew, it seemed insulting to God to use it.

"""From what I read, it is not the Watchtower Society that gave us the name "Jehovah," """

That is obviously very true since the name has been in existance long before the WTBTS has been.
The only reason so many people automaticlly assume they created the name is because they are the only religion that uses it in everything they do.
But the NAME Jehovah is nothing more then the Hebrew name translated So there would be no reason for you to find the name Jehovah in a Hebrew anything. The same reason you would not find the word Howdy in the Hebrew language.

Take a look at this page: http://www.yhwh.com/jehovah.htm It discusses the Catholic Dominican monk, Raymundo Martini and his book Pugio Fidei, and states that this is the origin of the use of "Jehovah". But, the same web page seems to contradict itself later, and say that the usage came from the masorites.

    What am I missing?

You won't find howdy in hebrew, but the sound in hebrew is kinda like 'ah good' or 'splendid'.

    Bang,
Are you the source of a spiritual awakening for me? I open my heart. I feel my feelings. I see my fears. I wait for a manifestation of his love: warmth, peace, a mosquito bite, a short story.

Yet, it's hard conveying this to my kids. When I pray with them, we use words. Short, simple prayers.

Read any Hawthorne? It's all about the symbols, man.
