The problems Bible believers have with Atheists is the burden of proof is on the Believer and we just do not have enough proof.

Athiesm is not a belief system...much like OFF is not a TV channel or NOT going skiing is my hobby...

It is simply a lack of belief in a God in the first place to then make a decision whether to believe in him or not...

The questions your coworker asks you, is very relevant. All these questions (unanswered) will probably help a lot of people to “come out” from a world of superstitions thoughts. They will cleanse the world from harmful, dangerous ideas that has caused the world so much pain. The thought that our god is more powerful than yours has driven endless of people into war. (although it’s obviously an Biblical thought).

I myself “came out” after 20 years of struggle with my own conscience. But in my back head, rumbled always questions like why do certain people only live a few days others only some week, then they starve to death.

Did god also create bacteria, viruses, earthquakes, greed, cancer.

How could god kill all humans in a flood except for 8 other people, when he/she was actually the father of them all?

I dont think its a blanket rule that belivers get agitated by rational challenges to there superstitions. In fact in my day to day life i have only gained by the friendship and acceptance of being able to beg to differ. So we simply settle on the fact, i am Athiest your Christian, your a Muslim, and more importantly " its ok" .

On the other hand, on a debating forum, when we discuss thoughts, feelings and emotions it seems more important to win a debate.

Personally i think that " Bible belivers" often have enough problems defending the " Bible" with fellow belivers that dont believe the book is all inspired by God.

Good point, and I hope that nobody forgets the countless animals that were needlessly murdered in the Flood.

Bugbear, i think to answer your point.

The pain and suffering in the world today, how can i be happy with that going on.

Answer: I am happy, unless something really tragic happens in my immediate world. So let a jumbo jet crash, the death of strangers passes me by.

So i think the concept of God destroying mankind and animals, is like wise beyond our ability to personalize it.

Are we not we the same as the belivers of the flood? I mean We live in a world but do we really care about those living and suffering today? Unless it tickles the emotions like " Band Aid" did.

So thats how i answer "My " question as why people believe these bible stories. I think if we were not as equally as insensitive we would have to up on our own " Reason" to live.

Being an evangelical Christian is the same as being a TROLL.

Blanket statements without supporting evidence are made.

    Some unwitting nincompoop takes exception.

    A conversation is started.

The fisherman jerks the line and the hook goes in.

    Voila! Praise de Lawd!

Thanks for being open and honest about how you feel.
I wonder if it is this lack of sensitivity , or shutting ourselves off to the pain that others go through, that is a key factor for many in maintaining the belief in a Biblical God that also must, logically, not be strongly moved by the pain and death that he sees. Or else he would have to act, as nobody would stop him, he is not bound by any constraints.

Yet many others are torn apart inside when they see people on the news that have lost their homes or children in a disaster that a God could have prevented. Or they are moved to act when they hear reports of animal abuses.
The God of the Bible does not put the health and happiness of all living beings above anything else, that much is for certain. So believers in that God have to categorise at least some of the suffering they see as unimportant, or of less importance than God's will.
Belief in the Bible's stories as literal is insidiously desensitizing, in my view.
