I personally think this pay by credit or debt card is only hurting them. Think about it, JW's do everything to impress others. I remember a few waving around their checks as the walked slowly toward the donation box, hoping everyone would notice. I'm going to guess if no one is watching them they would choose to use their hard earned money in other ways.

The contribution boxes are still there for the ones who like to show off. Meanwhile, the forgetful ones will probably end up paying more if it's automatic.

The only way I see it hurting them is for people like me who see all the wasteful spending on poinless renovations and spending $100k+ on computers/projectors/TVs for the assembly halls, etc, then watch as they add credit card and ATM machines to the assembly halls and conventions after years of railing on "christendom" for doing the same. For me it was: wasteful spending + trying to get more donations = i'm cutting you off.

Folks that see the pattern and recognize it for what it is are probably a very very small minority, so the net effect of this is that they'll keep raking it in. There's a limit to how much juice you can get from the orange, and I think they're coming up on it soon. People can only give so much with nothing in return.

Our efforts have provided us with beautiful places of worship here and all over the world, more than enough to help when disasters hit, hey, even for paying for the mistakes made for not turning in abusers to the authorities, truth be told. However, one must use common sense and intelligence when donating. We as a family unit usually donate as applicable for the monthly KH expenses and during the assemblies we donate $10 per person/per day; this sound quite reasonable and extremely affordable at this time. A heck of slot less than those crazies that give 10 percent of their earnings!

It is pathetic to see church members on street corners asking for money to fund their crap, or the silly parking lot, baked goods, etc., sales to gather funds. The way JWs do it is very dignified and thus far is working magnificently for us.

I personally think that one way to make them change would be that we all agree to stop donating... those that can at least. Even that little counts once you add everybody up.

When I brought this up to my wife (she still very much in, prefers to ignore some of the bad things) I told her that most members of other churches would agree to donate, even if they had many grievances towards their faith. Just the thought that it takes a bit of money to run a place that we all use (the KH) but that given the new arrangement on donations and the fact that all left overs will be sent to the WT, I could not conciously support this organization anymore. To my surprise she agreed. Haven't made a single donation in over a year.

If DF'ed riff raff like me can be a part of this meeting, how jaw dropping of an announcement can it be?

Unfortunately I had planned to trim my toe nails on Saturday and the liklihood of me being able to attend this meeting is looking dubious.

We could do with someone recording the Zone visit on Saturday - guessing that's when it is - so we can all get the low down on here next week. Yeah could be money, but could be something totally unexpected ha ha.

I suspect the only reason they wanted only publishers present at the 2013 AGM was because they had door prizes (the new "bible").

The other day my wife said "I'm surprised they didn't say that it should only be publishers this year" to which I replied "I don't think that's a big concern...can you imagine sitting through a dull 3 hour meeting if you weren't a publisher?"

At the very least, I'm sure there will be a few with tablets giving highlights on here as it happens. I'll probably be one of them depending on how things go.

Bake sales tend to be for a specific purpose, such as to help fund a youth group missions trip for example. Gustv I find it interesting that you find asking for money doing an activity such as bake sales as pathetic, but you don't see going door to door passing out magazines as such?

To each his own. But really, there is no comparison. It is like apples and oranges. When these churches are raising funds, it is usually for a specific purpose. To help others in need. Perhaps a food bank for the poor. Or funding missionaries. The churches I have been to have been very transparent. Full financial made available to congregants. Unlike the watchtower.

As a youth, I participated in bake sales, dinners, car washes, etc. that went towards missionary trips. On these trips we helped rebuild schools in poor areas in different countries, or to support missionaries who were in a poor country building schools or medical clinics. All funds, and I mean ALL funds, went to help others. Not the church. Which is absolutely not even comparable to the greed of the watchtower.

The watchtower is a corrupt and manipulative organization that does no humanitarian efforts. It baffles me that people keep giving more to this beast.

did they say actually say it was an "announcement" that will "Test your faith"? Or is it called "Test your faith"?

If it's the latter, I'm guessing is going to be about MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, Pioneering, or an arrangement change.....
