Oh, and I was once advised by an elder that photography was a dangerous hobby because of all the scantily clad females in the photo magazines.

Celtic
Snakes and Ladders was definately off limits because of it's association to the game of Leela, game of ancient knowledge.
Cricket was deemed fine for a while, but then the elders came down on that because it represented a competitive spirit. Rounders on the beach went the same way, banned, cos it might stumble some having large gatherings on the beach. Barn dancing, thank ruddy goodness theu outlawed that, what dreadfully quite frightful boring evenings they were.

Sorry guys - but the brothers played chess and everyone played snakes and ladders.
Probably a locality thing.... depending on the 'tude of the elders.

RE Snakes & Ladders:
*******************************************************
The Celtic practice of binding the dead, used now as a devotional aid by some modern groups, was originally an indication that the dead person had undergone the necessary stages and purification towards the final judgment and redemption. The actual pattern of the knot was considered to be the important thing; the pattern formed by the lines of the binding being a symbol of secondary importance.
The art of binding is to be seen in one of its best forms in the old craft of thatching. The pegs and binders are traditionally but into a crossed shape, held by a final structure over the roof trees that also has a very close connection with Witchcraft.
There is good reason to assume that the nursery game of snakes and ladders originated in a much older pastime connected with binding. One aspect of the snake is that of the Tempter or Destroyer, and the game remains as a lesson upon life: one either ascends by the aid of the ladder, or descends via the snake. The action of the game is still dependent upon the throw of a black and white cube (dice)--a symbol of Fate from ancient times.

Just shows what a crock all this 'origins' thing is ...just play the bloody games, who gives a toss what the origins are!!!!

This is one treat that I am definitely going to save. So that every time I am being told/asked/begged to come back to the congregation, I will remember just the impertinence of the GB telling people what kind of hobbys they should not keep. Funny, that as a drone, you really dont see just how ridiculous and ludicrous it all is. Thanks for reminding me.
And another thing we were allowed to do, play scrabble.

A hobby can even help you to advance spiritually. If you like to make models, for example, might not building a miniature ark deepen your appreciation of the strength of Noahs faith? (See box.) Constructing a model tabernacle or temple may likewise improve your knowledge of the way Gods servants worshiped long ago. In Bible times the shepherd boy David played the harp in his spare time. Later he composed beautiful songs to Jehovahs praise. Could you learn to play a musical instrument yourself? If so, why not use your talent to praise God by learning some of the melodies in the songbook SingPraisestoJehovah? As you play the music, ponder over the sentiments the lyrics convey. Are you a collector? Then gather items that relate to the Bible. Or try filling a scrapbook with pictures of Bible lands
HaHaHaHaHaHaHa!!!!
That is sooo funny! Yeah, let's learn a biblical instrument and play Kingdum songs!! What a blast!
