  There were always plenty of social activities when I was a dub...from sports games to scrabble or card games and sometimes board games - I loved the canasta nights - a group of extremely giggly sisters of my vintage with a pack of cards or a game of pictionary, together with a couple of glasses of wine under their belts...what a laugh! I sometimes watch my old home videos of our fun times...most of the kids in them are all grown now...and are on the verge of adulthood...and some of the couples have split up and have moved away...there are also a few who have left this world due to cancer. I miss them sometimes, but I soon get over it.

  Yes I recall an old German couple when I was a kid that wouldn't play cards. I think their reasoning was it was the Devils game.

  Oh Dia, when I was younger I also used to play the electric organ. Everytime anyone would come over my parents would bug me to go and play it.

  your post about a kid kicking a soccer ball reminds me of one picture of the ever future paradise earth. in the background of a picture can be seen either a tractor or bulldozer so my guess is, fossil full running vehicles are now allowed in the new system.

  which made me further think on the "danger" of that. say something like, "in the new system i'm going to get in my car and travel, travel, travel." the first response is, you guessed it. "we aren't going to hace cars in the new system." "oh, OK then I'll ride a horse or walk.", etc.

  then what does the WTB&TS do? -they put a tractor in a picture, which sends volumes out to the privleged class. now cars, by implication are OK.

  I remember THAT 1973 awake! article on chess. Just a year before I was in the top ten school players in the country but at the time of the article I was pioneering, MS, etc etc. Out went all the chess books. Damn. Have mellowed a bit since then and a few books have made their way back. Still play club and county chess and have no problems about it in the congregation. I agree that compared with the addiction and violence of video games chess is simply too small fish to fry.

  When I first came into the Org, back in the early 70's, there used to be at least 2 congregation picnics a summer, and a get-together during the winter. It was STRONGLY encouraged to eat at each other's homes in groups of 2 or 3 families weekly if possible, and we'd then play cards, chat, whatever.

  We also had get-togethers after Book Studies, and plenty of baby/wedding showers. We also used to play Euchre(sp?) cards A LOT.

  In other words - we associated as FRIENDS also. I loved it.

  Then the 80's came, and I moved to South Carolina. ALL ASSOCIATION STOPPED. Period. Very little association, no picnics, no sports, no gathering, very few invitations given or accepted. We all were soooooooooooo concerned that *something* might happened and we (the hosts) would get blamed. So almost all of us did NOTHING.

  The teenagers found their own amusements - surprise. surprise. surprise.

  If any parents complained or wanted to have gatherings.....they now have to be PRE-APPROVED by the elders....and the hosts are quick to tell everyone that...just in case.

  Really shitty, actually.

  The only reason I would go to a Jw gathering was to eat. All the games were lame as hell, and designed for nerds to win. We once played a game were questions were asked to married couples, my wife and I lost, but Im sorry I dont know how many pairs of shoes my wife has, I cant name the type of makeup she wears, I dont know how she arranges her garments, because I dont look, why should I, I dont think Im going to wear anything of hers. I dont know what type of laundry detergent she uses, I am just thankful my shirts dont stink.
