Joe, well, looks like I'll have some extra turkey...you comin to my place for grub on Thursday?
Sincerely,
District Overbeer
Thanks for the invite Val, but would you believe it, I've already got plans?!! A family-free loser like me with plans on Thanksgiving?! What the hell is going on here?
Seriously, I'm having a 'no family' dinner with three friends from work. They've all got family too far away to visit and I... well, you know. sorry dude.
I'll drop you an email. maybe I can drop by your place too (can't have too much turkey and fun now can you?).

Joe...as long as you are having Thanksgiving I'm happy...I was just making sure that I didn't have any Apostates left out of the festivities. Have a good turkey day and yes please do stop by if you need to have a bit more bird.
Sincerely,
District Overbeer
Valis ,
I would like nothing better than to have a big old family dinner, but that is their decision, not mine. They know they are welcome here any time as long as they don't bring their religion with them.
Maybe something you said will sink in. Like you said, all it takes is kicking out just the right rock in the dam. Hang in there and have a great Thanksgiving anyway. els
Valis, This probably won't be much help, but I would always make it very clear to your parents, that despite your differences, you would greatly appreciate a visit from them anyway, at any time. As long as they understand that its them, not you that is breaking off the communication, then you have done everything you can.

(((Valis))).........I'm so sorry to hear this happened. I know how frustrating it can be.
I've long thought though, that the main problem with making JWs see the problem with the religion is not because of 5 meetings a week or even the pedophile problem. The real problem is that as long a each Jehovah's Witness believes that the Governing Body were appointed by God in 1919 to "watch over the flock", then absolutely everything bad that goes on in the congregation can be explained away. That's the bottom line, as long as they believe these men have a direct link to God.
If you can show your father that Jeruselem was NOT destroyed in 607 BCE but in 586 BCE, you'll see the wheels start turning in his head (I'm talking from experience here). Because without that date, that means Jesus didn't "Return" in 1914, which means God never appointed the "Faithful & Discreet Slave" in 1919 CE. Without that authority built on sand, then the whole religion is brought into question. Don't forget: this is what preceeded Ray Franz from being forced out: he came to the discovery about 607BCE and Freddie Franz apparently went off the deep end because he realized what a threat it was to their authority.
So forget trying to talk to your dad about 5 meetings a week and "apostates", etc.........If you can just present this one simple fact it could start a chain reaction.
Valis-
It sucks that we all were caught in this religion. Just remember where they are coming from, and what they have been taught. Stay the bigger person, and hopefully one day, even if they don't leave the organization, maybe they will relax, and you can have the family that you want and deserve.
Valis
Man, I'm really sorry about this. I haven't seen my father in over 10 years. Nice loving religon huh? Sometimes family can be more cruel than a stranger. You're a good guy and you deserve better. Hang in there and don't let them beat you down.
Take care,
Chris
