Is America going to allow another Turkish atrocity? ... escalation?

Okay, well, the information that I read earlier today was that ONE thousand (not TEN) Turkish troops had crossed the border, but since then the press has heard that it was a false report -- confirmed not only by the Turkish Foreign Minister but also by Iraqi Kurds

From a Reuters report by Ferit Demir:

''The reports in question are not true, they do not reflect reality,'' a military statement said. ''The Turkish armed forces have made every preparation and are ready to implement their plans when the situation and conditions dictate.''

Iraqi Kurds also denied any Turkish commandos had crossed.

''I can confirm to you no (new) Turkish troops so far have entered or been deployed into our areas,'' senior Iraqi Kurdish official Hoshyar Zebari told a news conference in northern Iraq.

I can't get a link, but AOL users can find the article by clicking on the "U.S. Abandons Turkey Deployment Plan" and then looking under "related articles." Hard to know just what's happening.

Of course, the Foreign Minister did say that Turkey reserves the right to go into Iraqi territory to "contain" refugees because of Turkey's fear of an eventual Kurdish state, and the U.S. did say that Turkey sending troops in would be ill-advised.

    I guess: stay tuned?

I have seen from first hand the hypocrisity of the U.S Goverment in my country.

IN 1974 TURKEY HAS ATTACKED MY COUNTRY CYPRUS AND TURKEY USED AMERICAN WEAPONS AND HAS OCCUPIED 37% OF THE ISLAND SINCE 1974.

TURKEY KILLED 10,000 PEOPLE AND 1670 MISSING(5 ARE AMERICAN CITIZENS)

ALL THE WEAPONS THAT TURKEY USE WERE FROM U.S SOMETHING THAT IS AGAINST THE U.S LAW (INCLUDING NAPALM BOMBS), USING U.S WEAPONS AGAINST AN ATTACK FOR OTHER COUNTRY

HENRY KISSINGER A WAR CRIMMINAL HAS MASTERED TYRKEYS ATTACK IN MY COUNTRY

ALTHOUGH U.N. ORDERED TURKEY TO LEAVE CYPRUS THEY STILL OCCUPIED THE LAND AND 200,000 PEOPLE HAVE TO GO TO THE FREE SOUTH PART OF THE ISLAND

TURKEY HAS REPLACED THE GREEK HABITANTS OF THE OCCUPIED AREA WITH TURKS

MY QUESTION IS: WHY DOES THE U.S. GOVERMENT CHOOSE'S SELECTIVE POLICY REGARDING THE U.N RESOLUTIONS? WHY DOESN'T THE U.S. GOVERMENT COME HERE AND SEND OUT THE TURKISH TROOPS THAT OCCUPYING 37% OF MY COUNTRY?

WHY DOES THE U.S GOVERMENT DOES NOTHING TO HELP A SMALL COUNRTY OF 600,000 CHRISTIAN PEOPLE IN ORDER TO HAVE JUSTICE AND FREEDOM AGAINST A BRUDAL COUNTRY OF 70,000,000?

ALL WHAT THE U.S GOVERMENT THEY KEEP TELLING US, IS TO KEEP THE NEGOTATIONS? DON'T YOU THINK MR BUSH THAT 27 YEARS OF NEGOTATIONS ARE ENOUGH?

WHY DIDN'T USE THE SAME STANDARTS IN IRAQ TOO? MAYBE WE ARE SMALL AND DON'T HAVE OIL I QUESS?

U.S GOVERMENT IS GUILTY FOR WAR CRIMES IN MANY COUNTRYS IN THE WORLD STARTING FROM:

HIRROSIMA, NAGASAKI, KOREA, VIETNAM, CYPRUS, YUGOSLAVIA, AND NOW IRAQ...WHO'S NEXT?

Yes, the United States is unpardonably guilty for not saving everybody on earth from themselves.

Could you give me a brief rundown on both why and how "most Americans" should have this information?

When you are part of a country that claims to be democratic, and war is imminent, it is best to be aware of the whole situation. Yellow ribbons aren't substitutes for brains.

You evidently intend that to stand in as the "why" part. I missed the "how" part... could you repeat it for me?

I also missed your answer on whether you personally did the interviews to learn what "most Americans" think.

Average American sitting in his home, listening to the news:

"Hmm... Bush wants to invade Iraq. I better educate myself quickly on how Turks treat Kurds."

    Wow COMF!

The US is co-ordinating the dissolution of Iraq. It has to ensure that opportunists do not help themselves to the country. Agreed? What Turkey does is Northern Iraq is the US's responsibility.

ISP, please keep sight of the subject we're discussing here. We're not debating the responsibility of US political and military leaders to protect Iraq from opportunists in the wake of the coalition attack. The statement gitasatsangha made that prompted my response was, "Most Americans have absolutely no idea how hellish the Turks treat Kurds, or even their own people."

My question to him was, first, why should we be expected to have that knowledge, and second, how are we supposed to get it?

You guys seem to think "most Americans" are fighting the war and making the military and political decisions. What, you think we run down to the polls and vote whenever a choice is to be made, and then Bush and Powell react according to the results of American popular vote?

gitasatsangha was ragging on "most Americans". I'm asking him why it is supposed to be shameful that I don't know what's going on between Turks and Kurds in two small countries on the other side of the world frim me, three days into a war I didn't declare and am not fighting or controlling. What does he think can do with this knowledge once I have it? Shall I fly over to Turkey and stand on the border stopping the Turkish troops from crossing?

Hey COMF, for what its worth, I didn't know much about the history between the Kurds and Turks. I guess that would go for most Americans. However, the planning of 'Iraqi freedom' would have to take into account this aspect. I am sure Turkey won't step out of line. They would have to be stupid to do so. whether that makes it less likely to happen, I don't know!

ISP, from what I read in the news, and based on a video of Colin Powell speaking to reporters, the problem with the US getting permission to fly in over Turkey stemmed from the fact that the Turks wanted to send troops in as a condition of approval of the fly-over, and the US would not agree to it.

I can't link to the video because the link relies on a javascript routine embedded in the page and wouldn't work from here.
