I always thought of going from the "Watchtower" and "Awake" magazines to the "Left Behind" series like somebody going from heroin to methdone; one crutch for another......
The "Left Behind" book series. Has anyone read the books?

Some better apocalypse books..
A Canticle For Liebowitz, Walter Miller
St. Liebowitz And The Wild Horse Woman, Revised and finished by Walter Miller Jr.
Farnham's Freehold, Robert Hienlien
Alas Babylon, Pat Frank
Its sci fi, but good reads I think.

Valis, thanks for mentioning Canticle for Liebowitz. Been years since I read that. i think I might just read it again, now.
If you are just into rapture-stories, read "To Your Scattered Bodies Go" by Phillip Jose Famer. It's cool.. like a Paradise gone terribly wrong. Skip "Riverworld" on SCI-Fi channel while you read it though. They buggered the story up down backwards and sideways for some reason.

Gitas: That always happens with book->movie conversions, because there's a huge gulf between the mediums.

District Overbeer those are some of my favortie books. Ever read "Malevil" by Robert Merle I think. Highly recommeded, an interesting little twist at the end.

wow..........easily irritated people.
I still maintain - it's fiction. If someone believes it..........say, like those that believe in the fundamental teachings of the Bible - that's their freedom. Even though I don't agree. I'm just not furious about it.
If someone wants to read and dismiss as interesting or not? That's their freedom too.
If someone wants to urinate on them in their outrage that such dispicable trash is sold......along with the teachings of others churches, etc? Well, just don't get caught. Btw, the Methodists by into the Rapture also......didn't realize that they were classified along with the fundies.
I don't really care either way. I'll still read what I want.........but that doesn't mean I believe what I read. I like all kinds of books.
Actually, I thought The Lathe of Heaven was one of the better science fiction reads. But it's been decades since then.

waiting...Ursula Leguin correct? I don't think I have read that one...didn't she also do some collaborative work with another author on a post apocalyptic world? It was set in a world where most of is had become desert and there were lots of differently mutated humans/non humans left? Man I wish I could remember that book!

Sorry but I am also someone who's stomach litteraly churns when I even look at these books.
Did you all know there is a board game based on the series for children? Yes! The goal is to go around and try and convert all your friends before the rapture so they don't die!
Sorry but it sounded just a little bit too familar to me.
What frightens me even more is how popular these books are. They all end up on the best sellers list. It frightens me to think we live among people who believe that salvation is only for a few and most everyone else is fodder for satan. I dunno, something so egotistcal about that, and books that perpetuate those notions of spiritual superiority are on my sh*t list.

Well said. My sentiments exactly. I'm pissed about them mostly because my brother and his wife are "true believers" in this BS. I can't stand the thought that they think they will be whisked off to heaven while the rest of the family begs god for mercy. Whatever.
They also have a series of Left Behind books for kids in addition to the game.

Ok, I got a question, suppose that one day the Rapture does occur, what would you think then?? Just a supposition here.
