The "Left Behind" book series. Has anyone read the books?

The left behind series is based on a fundamentalist interpretation of a passage of scripture that is not included in all translations of the bible; it is written by fundamentalists for fundamentalists and has a sort of "We told you so" hint of superiority to it.

When I swept the WT out of my life - having had no choice of its being there in the first place - I swept all notions of fundamentalism out with it. I don't mean to be sounding superior in my own turn, however I feel I'm just too intelligent to be in any way, shape, or form a fundamentalist about anything having to do with religion.

We have evolved in Christianity a religion of fear, based on fear, perpetuated by fear, fed by fear. Fear is an unworthy motivator. It is especially unworthy of us to assign to God the use of fear as a motivator. The God in which I believe is a God of Love, and uses Love as a motivator. He does not stoop into the moral swamp to use fear as a motivator. Therefore, if some so-called "theology" is fear-based, has the least stench of it anywhere, it's not for me.

And the idea that yet ANOTHER elite is going to be snatched up to heaven and a whole bunch of people will be left here outside God's love to fend for themselves in fear and loathing is just more fear-mongering as far as I'm concerned. I don't think it even makes a good theme for a book. So you guys read it and tell us about it.

P.S. Valis, "A Canticle for Lebowitz" is indeed a great book. Funny in places (like the shopping list) and pathetic in others. A great read.

Did you all know there is a board game based on the series for children? Yes! The goal is to go around and try and convert all your friends before the rapture so they don't die!

Sounds like a game they would play at Ned Flanders house!!

Ok, I got a question, suppose that one day the Rapture does occur, what would you think then?? Just a supposition here.

Then we go to Princesses house for a big party.

Seriously, what are you supposed to think while you're watching the so called chosen ones look down saying "HA HA, told ya so". Same thing when Armageddon comes.

waiting, you can catagorise my attitude as 'easily irritated', but I note you didn't contend with ONE thing I said in making my comparisons. Maybe I'm overly analytical, but I think if a JW was writing a book about Armagedon in a similar vein, people would kick up FAR more.... a while back everyone was most condemnatory of a Flash movie some Dub had done of Armagedon. These books are the same. Contemptable. Bad is bad, very simple, see? But ya don't have to agree with me!

    Yizuman;

I'd think, "Oh no, god IS an asshole, can you believe that? He's playing games, all he had to do was be reasonable, but it WAS a £ucking ineffable plan all along. Illogical monster god, if that is god's idea of justice then god isn't my idea of god."

um if I was still alive when a rapture came I would know I was right all along...I would also be thanking whatever god decided to rid the earth of all those overly righteous assholes that have plagued our earth for way too long...I hope heaven has room for them all and god can put up with the incessant bible study....*LOL*

    Sincerely,

I just rented the "Left Behind" movie and I just want say that I think this is the most manipulative way to appeal to the weak-minded I have ever seen. I had to turn off the movie and I wasn't even halfway through. There are plot holes so wide you can drive a truck through them. The movie left me feeling angry at such an obviou attempt to oversimplify complex problems and get people to go to church. The movie should be entitled "The Southern Baptist View of the World". Urgh.

Okay, who was attacking Israel in the beginning of the movie? And why? Why were the planes destroyed? Who did it? If it was God, why didn't God intervene in the other 4 wars against Israel since 1947? Didn't anyone notice the sky going dark? Also a guy dressed as what I'm assuming is Elijah approaches a reporter doing a live shot says his little piece and then walks away and the reporter doesn't follow him? I don't think so. No "world famous" reporter would have let Elijah just walk away without carpet bombing him with hundreds of questions.

Okay then people start disappearing. Did ya notice it was only white people that disappeared? Guess God is white after all. Oh yeah here's another thing, God takes ALL the children? Why? ALL children are good? What the age of cutting off? 18? I guess so, since there was a pilot whose wife and small son were taken, but not his teenage daughter. So the message is you can do whatever the hell you wan until your 18th birthday and then you better get it in gear chief, or God is gonna get ya.

I haven't read the books, but if they are anything like this asinine, toffee-headed, mindless, idiotic and manipulative movie then I will pass. It's like all someone has to do is mention "GOD" and it lends an air of authority to whatever they say. I've already been through one experience where I'm manipulated, and I'll be damned if I'll go through another one.

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!

Ok to answer these questions to my understanding from the bible....it is my understanding that according to Ezekiel chapter 38 and 39, the bible talks about the King of the North....scholars believe someone from some country (they believe possibly the middle east country) that will gather other countries in unison in one agreement to attack one common enemy that all the countries commonly hate, that is the land of Israel.

Some certain event that will take place, something that Israel will have done will cause great anger in the middle east (of course, no country attacks another country without a reason, but one thing is agreeable by Scholars, Israel will do something to piss the Middle East off ) that all the countries will come together to try and rid of their one common enemy that they hate and has hated for centuries, possibily as far back as biblical times.

So, picture this, say all of the middle east armies gather together with everything they got, foot soldiers, tanks, planes, missles, etc. etc. Then they all come after Israel and according to the bible, God intervenes and wipes out the entire army at the edge of Israel or above Israel like the movie showing planes exploding in the sky for no reason.

When it is all said and done, according to this in scripture in Ezekiel chapter 39, starting at verse 9....

9 " 'Then those who live in the towns of Israel will go out and use the weapons for fuel and burn them up-the small and large shields, the bows and arrows, the war clubs and spears. For seven years they will use them for fuel. 10 They will not need to gather wood from the fields or cut it from the forests, because they will use the weapons for fuel. And they will plunder those who plundered them and loot those who looted them, declares the Sovereign LORD .
11 " 'On that day I will give Gog a burial place in Israel, in the valley of those who travel east toward [2] the Sea. [3] It will block the way of travelers, because Gog and all his hordes will be buried there. So it will be called the Valley of Hamon Gog. [4]
12 " 'For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them in order to cleanse the land. 13 All the people of the land will bury them, and the day I am glorified will be a memorable day for them, declares the Sovereign LORD .
14 " 'Men will be regularly employed to cleanse the land. Some will go throughout the land and, in addition to them, others will bury those that remain on the ground. At the end of the seven months they will begin their search. 15 As they go through the land and one of them sees a human bone, he will set up a marker beside it until the gravediggers have buried it in the Valley of Hamon Gog. 16 (Also a town called Hamonah [5] will be there.) And so they will cleanse the land.'

As you can see, the weapons they will gather together will provide Israel enough to burn as fuel to last them 7 years.

Then the bible states it will take them 7 months to bury all the bodies (or burn most of them in order to try to prevent diseases from spreading since there's no way they can bury all the bodies in 7 months before diseases start spreading from the dead corpses, but most will be buried)

When this could happen? Will the Left Behind book states it could happen before the Rapture begins, but many scholars argues that it could happen after the Rapture. There's no real way of knowing when exactly could happen, before or after the Rapture. Only time can tell.

That's all in my understanding why this happens.

If it was God, why didn't God intervene in the other 4 wars against Israel since 1947?

Because scripture doesn't say it will happen, there is only one particular prophecy that states God will intervene, it doesn't say that God will intervene 5 times, just one time. Don't ask me why, it just states that based on my understanding. I'm no expert in the bible, I'm just stating what I am learning about.

Also a guy dressed as what I'm assuming is Elijah approaches a reporter doing a live shot says his little piece and then walks away and the reporter doesn't follow him?

Buck Williams the reporter is just a character for starters, it doesn't say the bible about Buck or a reporter meeting Elijah . But let's just pretend for the sake of the arguement, Buck sees Elijah, do you think Buck would recognize who he was? For all he knows, he's just some crazy old man dressed up like the old days of Israel talking crazy things he doesn't recognize for what it means and disregards him and focused on the situation that was happening on hand. Personally I don't think Elijah is gonna show up right in the middle of God fly swatting the army attacking Israel.

Anyway, speaking of Elijah, Revelations says that he and Moses will appear (that's what scholars believes that will appear and I am tending to agree with them. This is something that will take way too long to explain and maybe another time to discuss it.) in accordance to Revelations chapter 11 which talks about the 2 witnesses and many scholars believe they both will appear sometime after the Rapture. We don't know when extactly when, it could be days, weeks or months, but they will appear nonetheless, somewhere in the city of Jerusalem.

    Revelation 11The Two Witnesses

1 I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, "Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, and count the worshipers there. 2 But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for 42 months. 3 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth." 4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. 5 If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies. This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die. 6 These men have power to shut up the sky so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying; and they have power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.
7 Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will attack them, and overpower and kill them. 8 Their bodies will lie in the street of the great city, which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. 9 For three and a half days men from every people, tribe, language and nation will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial. 10 The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.
11 But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, "Come up here." And they went up to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies looked on.
13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.

As you can see, the two witnesses as mentioned in scripture will be preaching for 1,260 days and no harm shall come upon them for that period of time, after those days are up, their protection will be lifted and they can be killed. 3 days after their deaths, they will be resurrected in front of everyone near them and taken back up to heaven. Pretty much it.

That's all of my understanding, don't take my word for it, check it all out for yourself. Like I said before, I'm not an expert, so don't shoot me if my understanding is in error.

Never read the books.... reading the bit on the back of the book was enough for me personally. I think its a load of bee's wax to me!

I think the bible is a much better book to read and study with the help of the Holy Spirit.

A relation-ship with God is more important than anything else first and formost or else all has been in vain. Always test the spirits against the bible which is the truth. Don't just read some crap written by man as a piece of fiction.

If you won't some good Christian fantasy what about Tolkien or C.S Lewis. Who's theology and beliefs won't lead you astray.

Have faith in God that He is in control of everything and knows everything past, present and future.

Your armaggedon may be just a round the corner ( hopfully not) but if it is are you right with God now....

I appreciate what you're saying and I don't want to get into a theology debate, but my questions/criticisms were directed towards the movie. See, in the move they didn't identify the invading fighter jets. So that hurts the credibility of the film. Also they didn't identify Elijah. I kind of figured it was Elijah, I'm rusty with my Bible but not that rusty. But again, my point in criticising the film is they did not identify this man dressed up in robes, nor did they show anyone questioning who he was. I would think if a reporter is filming his account of how mysterious fighter jets are mysteriously falling from the sky (which went completely black and nobody comments on that either), I would expect said reporter to go question this "crazy old wizard" (wonder if his name was Ben Kenobi?). I'll tell you this though if in real life something like that happened, when the reporter got back, he would be seriously chewed up or even fired for not questioning Elijah. That's what reporters do.

I just had major problem with the film. It was poorly written, plot holes all through it, and the characters behaved illogically. That was the point of my post Yiz.

I'd think the same thing as if the witnesses are right and armageddon happens. I don't want to spend eternity with a bunch of self righteous f#$ks. Oh and then there is the party I invited everyone to attend.
