You could also thread cotton through the loop and tie at any length you want.

    Or tinsel.

    Or raffia.

    Or duck tape.

ps what is the differance between duck and duct tape???

    Poor Poor Elsewhere!

There's nothing more pathetic than watching an ex-jehovahs Witness, trying to act like a worldly heathen bastard , and decorating their Ba'al and not having a clue on how to do it.

I'm coming out with a book called " How to act like a heathen bastard..... for ex-jw's")

Minimus has already ordered two from me.

heathen bastards? what about us heathen bitches? No "It's a good heathen thing" book for us?

As for the ornament hooks.........you can purchase a whole box of them in silver or green color. Obviously, if you're tree's green - green is "a good thing." I was amazed at how easy it was - last year was my first heathen celebration, btw.

I have a good tabletop tree (prestrung with lites - cause I don't get into stringing lights)....but it wobbled slightly. Florist wire works great - and it's green. I just strung a length of that fine thin wire around the whole 4 ft tree, and stablized it to the window shutters behind it (tree was close to wall).

If the tree fell, well, my whole wall would too. I didn't tell my husband my trick.............figured he would think duct tape would work better. Probably would have - but it doesn't come in green.

If one likes to shop around, after Christmas you can pick up marvelous stuff up to 75%+ off.

I bought generic plain stuff the first year before Christmas.......then after, bought some great stuff one at a time. The generic ornaments? This year they go into a big glass container on table. Gonna get my glue gun out (feminine version of duct tape) & make a wreath out of the extra generic ornaments.

The first year was kinda expensive..........but we forget - most other people have accumulated ornaments for decades. After the first year, no big deal on decoration expense.

The color, glitter, shiny, old-fashioned, whatever is marvelous fun!

GREAT ideas, waiting! I did the same thing: bought two small boxes of generic red and gold ball ornaments and figure we'll add to it as we go along. I want to get one that says "2003 -- Our First Christmas" which is somehow appropriate. At Garden Ridge, where I bought the ornaments and the pre-lit tree, I picked up a package of simple green hooks for the ornaments. There are also more ornate ones, but we'll see how these work this year.

I don't look on it as how much I missed out on all these years, but as an opportunity to be a kid again and do something for the Very First Time! There's no right or wrong to it -- just enjoy!

    GLUE GUN!!!

I forGOT about the glue gun!!! That works great for hanging ornaments too! You only have to do it once! Next year... just trot out the tree, and it is already decorated from the previous year!

oh man, here I thought getting a tree and decorating it was going to be easy. I feel so virginal.

There's nothing more pathetic than watching an ex-jehovahs Witness, trying to act like a worldly heathen bastard , and decorating their Ba'al and not having a clue on how to do it.

Now I really feel like I am going to stand out like a sore thumb..

so where do we get a book??

We need a book for the Holiday Challenged.. since we were deprived of training and life skills regarding festive decor.. it would be helpful for a to do or tip book.

    "2003 -- Our First Christmas"

Nina, they have those. We got one in 2001..............Dave bought it for me to surprise me. It's a small heart shaped pillow ornament, with those words embroidered on it. Who would have thought we would wait 38 years for our first Christmas together. We had a tiny Rosemary tree with earring sized ornaments, but it was ours and we loved it.

Oh you poor x-mas challenged friends of mine - since I am coming up on my 13th x-mas since leaving the JW's let me give you some advice for the first year user.....

TOP 10 HELPFUL HINTS FOR THE JW'S FIRST X-MAS

    1) Don't try to cut down your own tree - those pretty trees in the neighbor's yard are actually part of the landscape and they will have you arrested if you try to take it. Just go to a local neighborhood tree stand and get one.

    2) While at the tree farm - make sure that you don't pick up the first tree - that will look like you're a beginner. Look at over 15 different trees - even if you don't know why or what you're doing. At least you'll look like an expert.

    3) Have the tree-farm guy cut off about 2 inches from the bottom of the trunk. Then when you get home - put your tree up right away. It will soak up more water and stay fresher. If you don't have a tree stand and can't afford one, buy a smaller tree (4' tall) and use a large coffe can (like a folgers can) - it works in a pinch. Water EVERY day (take it from someone who learned that the hard way)

    4) There is a limit to how many strings of lights you can connect together and plug into one socket. (yep - another one I learned the hard way)

    5) Buy a couple special ornaments or hand make a couple as keepsakes for your first x-mas. My son and I painted pinecones and hung them on our tree - I still use these and they are a wonderful reminder of our first x-mas celebrated.

    6) Cats and trees don't mix well - especially if your cat likes to climb trees. Just beware...If you have a cat like mine perhaps you should decorate your tree with non-breakable ornaments.

    7) Santa doesn't really appreciate adults sitting on his knee at the mall.........no matter how sad it is that you missed out on that one, just pass it up. Trust me!

    8) Buy a few extra toys and donate them to a children's charity like the Salvation Army x-mas tree. It's a great way to get into the x-mas spirit and feel good about everything.

    9) If you decide to visit a living nativity, resist the urge to correct the errors (like the 3 wise men weren't there when Jesus was born - Jesus wasn't born on x-mas, yadda yadda) - most people already know that and don't care - but they are a bit irritated when you point it out.

    10) Begin a new christmas tradition that is yours alone. Mine is to buy my kids a special set of pajamas and a stuffed toy - I wrap them and label them as "x-mas eve" presents - every x-mas eve they get to open their first present and go to bed with their new jammies and new teddy bear.

Have fun - and make great memories.
