There is another area of decline that has been increasing.
Back in the early 1960's I pioneered where the need was great in NW Pennsylvania.
Smallish congregations every 30 to 40 miles apart. Usually run by headship families either original founders of the congregation or just dominant personalities.
Since I gave my public talk through out the circuit I got to know a lot of the JW's and their small cities and towns. One congregation had 20 members another 50 and everything in between. It took the circuit assembly to see how many of us there was.
Now those congregations are merging, unfortunately many of the 'friends' are required to drive (no public transportation) quite a distance to attend their meetings in what probably feels like a 'borrowed' kingdom Hall. 30 or 40 miles doesn't sound like a reach but when you experience six plus months of snow covered or iced over roads 30 or 40 miles......... going up and coming down the hills can be difficult and dangerous.
For those of us who have lived in winter climates in rural areas where the State and Townships can not always clear the roads.......... a long winter means many of the friends, especially the elderly, can not attend and support their congregation as they once did.
The Society appears to be obvious to the danger they have put their followers in for the sake of just what I don't know. As these congregations shrink, as the elderly stay home, we will see an increasing lack of enthusiasm. A pending snow storm means one is wise to stay off the roads.
Distance has a way of redefining one's beliefs and actions. As the local congregations dissolve......... families will stop meeting attendance in far away congregations and just about everything else that defines the JW construct.
