Charles J. Valorz was a DO by the time he reached Minnesota and Wisconsin. He gave the most interesting talks, and was approachable and down-to-earth. His wife Ellie impressed me as a very nice lady.

-Favorite CO: Erik Shephard; a truly kind and loving brother, he had a good influence on a lot of the people in my Hall. Is still famous for his "just haaaaaaaaangin around the Truth" line about inactive JW's.

-Funniest CO: Bill Adams; a rare Jewish JW, at least where I lived. Was famous for his pet peeve over brothers saying "Jehover". At one Thursday meeting he had a blackboard on stage with "JE-HO-VAH" and "JE-HO-VER" written on it and said,"Now is God's name Jehovah or Jehover....?"

-Least favorite CO: Dominic Rotella: three words- arrogant, pompous, asshole. Was a legend in my district for how much of a dictator and a dick he was. One of my congregations incidents with him was when he called out a brother for disagreeing with him on something during a field service group and said, "You'll never get anywhere in this congregation when I'm around." My dad, one of the last really good elders before he left, really flamed him one time when he used an analogy during a Watchtower comment about brothers using friendly encouragement to build each other up and drew an obvious contrast to our totalitarian CO.

Oklahoma late 70's Bro. Watson, then Bro. Gobitas (possibly the Gobitas from the West Virginia lawsuit?) then Joe Beleza in the mid 80's. I thought Ol' Joe was cool. He went fishing with some friends from Oklahoma and made a comment about someone being the "Master baiter of fishhooks", and then apparently laughed his ass off when he realized what he had said.

    Also Bro. Wyschuk

    I love these old threads.

I've been away for quite a while so I don't remember most COs in my youth. But I recall some.

Good: Gary Hughes. Nice guy from Florida. Used to be in the music business I recall. Ironically, he wanted to know what radio stations I had programmed into my car. I'm guessing a rock or rap station would have provoked some counsel. Fourtunately, being the total nerd I was (am) I had some NPR station and a college radio station that wasn't too wild (proto-New Wave or nascient Alternative).

Bad: Gene Sealy. I saw him mentioned early on here. What... an... ass! He was just mean. Classic JW guilt-driver. No one did enough. Not like him in the old days when you would get arrested and have your ass kicked for being a Witness. Somehow, I think he might have had a beatin' for being an arrogant jerk to the law. Apparently he got a limp out of it or something. He also gave diatribe in a talk once about carbuncles. I kid you not. Carbuncles. Not sure where it came from but he went on for a minute or two about how he used to get big carbuncles on his arm and would cut them with a pocket knife to drain them. Gross!

Of course most in the hall just tolerated it. He got honored for being so long in the "Truth" and for being a curmudgeon, I guess.

I've heard of Clayton Peace before. He was liked by some I know who enjoyed being abused by the WTS. Takes all kinds.

Don Galbraith is another I've heard of. Pretty much a true believer. Likes to hold up Bethel as the end-all. I wonder if he knows they are laying off. ;-)

Bottom line: Most of these men are too institutionalized and out-of-touch to be truly useful. Aren't they due to be unemployed soon too?

Does anyone have any recollection of a Circuit Servant by the name of Grizzle? I can't remember his first name, but he was CS when I was baptized in 1968. If you knew him, what was your impression of him? He visited my congregation the following week after my baptism and called on me to represent the congregation in prayer. So, the first time I ever prayed before an audience was during the CO's visit. I remember him as being a very sincere, eloquent speaker. So, a penny for your recollections and memories. What does he do now, if you know?

Yes, I remember Grizzel (sp?). He was CO in Oklahoma City sometime around 1970. Not a bad guy at all.

We had kind of a shakeup in this circuit right before him - the previous CO was called back to Missouri for a committee action and was disfellowshipped right in the middle of his weekly visit to Oak Glen congregation! One of the local servants (Marion Dunlap, I think) had to do the Saturday night talk and the Sunday meetings for him. It was Marion who told me what actually happened...the guy unexpectedly just told the servants that "he had to go back to Missouri for a very important judicial committee." He tried to make it sound like he was to be the presiding judge, rather than being the defendant!

Turned out he had been having an affair with a single pioneer lady there and she turned him in after he was re-assigned to Oklahoma.

I cannot remember the name of the bad apple CO, for some reason.

I read the remaks made about several circuit overseers and I don't agree with them. I thought the remarks about Dominic Rotella really missed the mark. He had a different kind of humor that if you didn't get you might think he was arrogant but that was far from the truth. Your dad must have needed some counsel or something and you sound like you're pretty bitter.

My favorite CO in Michigan was James Finch. He was cool, down to earth and understood people because he had his own family problems.
