Why does it have to be gay "marriage?"

The thread doesn't offend me. I understand why it's here (the media is also obsessed with it). But it is the usual ping pong of ideas and for those whose arguement is religiously based there's rarely any room for movement.

For the benefit of all you bible-thumpers out there that think I'm making that up, I suggest you read the following verses:

I am not a Bible thumper. I do however, accept the concept of marriage as the Bible protrays (between a man and woman). I don't agree that same sex couples shoud be allowed to marry, but i see no reason why they cannot have a legal union of some sort. I'm sure this will go to the supreme court, and it will either be made legal or the law that exists now will prevail. If given a chance to vote on this, i would vote against same sex marriages. Otherwise, I do not seek to impose my opinion on others unless asked for it.

    Itsallgood,

But you can't compare homosexuals to incest. C'mon now. It's the 21st century man!

Why not? What's the difference? Lots of people want to marry a first cousin, some would marry half sibling, and a small sector would even Marry a full blooded sibling. If we redefine marriage to include gay couples, why exclude the others.

A big difference. Homosexuality has NOTHING to do with incest. Talk about marriage all you want, but to equate the homosexuality with incest is offensive to a lot of people.

And Incest has nothing to do with Homosexuality...but Polygamists and Incestuous couples want to Marry too...you would discriminate against them? Why?

Stop being obtuse, the point is that the EXACT same arguements that are used for gay marriage also apply EQUALLY to polygamy and incest.

Yeru, I'm not being obtuse. I'm not arguing one way or the other. Frankly this is not a topic that interests me very much.

What I am saying is do not compare homosexuality with incest. That's all. To do so is offensive to a great many people. I would appreciate it if you, and others on this thread, could avoid equating incest with what two consenting adults of the same sex do. That's all.

Incest has nothing to do with this topic.

I wasn't going to post on this thread because I find that I've only been posting on the "Gay Threads." There's alot more to me than who I sleep with, but I had to comment. Especially after Shamus' posts.

I'm with you Scotsman. This thread doesn't offend me, either. It has disappointed me that the same sad arguments keep coming up. (Gay marriage = incest/polygamous marriage) BUT! And, that's a big BUT! I think it is necessary for society to discuss these issues.

Sorry, Shamus. I think it is very important for exJWs to discuss them as well. Many of us have abandonded our entire belief system. We are restructuring, replacing, our old JW beliefs. This board has helped so many people get their life back together after the JWs. This board and it's topics are a good foundation for our new belief system. If this topic is not discussed, then some on the board may keep the JW view of gays.

    Shamas,

I haven't read the whole thread, but I think you are a great person and it appears you have taken offense at this discussion. I hope you just click off of it for a while to calm down. If offensive comments were made I have confidence you can deal with it.

    Yeru,

I think it is the responsibility of the government to legislate behavior that is harmful to the public but NOT their business to legislate what some view as morality. Even if the majority view an action as 'immoral' to bad. As for as government involvement, it should not go into bed rooms and should stay away from judgments on what is religiously viewed moral or immoral. Obviously I agree with the founding father's who deliberately kept religion, the Bible, and even God, OUT OF THE CONSTITUTION.

If religionist want to claim the word "marriage" as their own, then it is time to recognize secular contracts between individuals as just as binding and entitled to all the rights and protection of the traditional institution of conventional moralists.

Lets stop using the government to legislate our personal morality.

Imho "marriage" (tm) as a religious/social institution has to be deconstructed/criticized from a number of angles. Even aside of the gay issue it has been the cause of much hypocrisy and unhappiness (divorced parents' child speaking), just because love and sex cannot be limited to any legal frame -- as we ALL know.

Of course discrimination has to be fought off. And I can understand the insistence on gay "marriage" in a very religious and moralistic society. However, I doubt this can be the solution -- just because gay marriage is not likely to be anymore realistic as an institution than traditional marriage. As far as I know, French gays do not insist so much on it as long as they have their practical rights acknowledged (in matters like taxes, successions, and so forth). The right to adopt children is a far more important and sensitive issue, but it doesn't have to be linked to any form of legal union (any single adult could just adopt a child regardless of his/her sex life if he/she is in a material and psychological position to care for him/her).

Whatever the case, times are changing, and I'm glad they are.
