The elder I mentioned who had read it thought that while he thought most of it were probably true, he still felt the Witnesses were closest to having "the truth." He's an intelligent chap who I know struggles with his faith, yet he continues.

Having read C of C and other books like it, I can say it may help but I don't think any book can change your attitude or mind for that matter. For me, change came from within, that which made me leave in the first place before knowing anything, UN, new light, etc. I just knew the JW thing wasn't right and C of C only helped me confirm my doubts.

My comments were going to be similar to what Attilla just wrote. If you are truly set in your ways of the faith, then reading one man's book wont change anything. Most dubs that I know, if they could be persuaded to read it, would rationalise away all the points that he makes.. Such is cognitive dissonance.

When I read it , I had already made up my mind that the "Truth" was just not true. i read it and it reinforced that conclusion no end.

I would have thought that the only ones who would read properly such a long and detailed "apostate" book , would be those who were already falling away fast

For a JW to even be open to reading CoC would be indicative of a questioning attitude (at least about some things). I think that CoC is, for many people, not the atom bomb that comes out of nowhere, but the straw that breaks the camel's back.

That being said, my father (who is DFd) read it and, although agrees with it, believes the JWs might still be "the best religion out there." If anything, imho, Ray is too easy on the organization and could have brought out a lot of points that would further highlight the JWs faults.

It is only the point of view of one man and that's all.

What happened in Malawi/Mexico is not a "point of view." It really happened to real people. And anyone who can read about that incident and have no passionate feelings of revulsion for the WTBTS is - as someone else on this board says so well - a braindead dubby. Just my opinion.

The 607 issue is also not a "point of view." Its called history.

    Sword of Jah:

The book is a typical "I'm right and everyone else is wrong" tale.

uhhhh, talk about the kettle calling the pan black..... isn't that exactly what JWs do?

I remember being a jw when the Malawi/Mexico horror happened. Of course, being a faithful jw......I never knew about the Mexico portion until I read & viewed the copied documents in CofC.

But I would never read the book until I was ready. AlanF made the best point some years ago: (paraphrasing)

A JW won't look around (or leave) until something personal hits him.

I agree. I wouldn't. Then something personally BIG happened to me........and I looked. I typed "Jehovah's Witnesses" into the internet (first time on the net btw) - and never stopped reading. CofC was the first literature I purchased from AN APOSTATE. lol - I called Randy, I was so nervous talking to AN APOSTATE. My voice was obviously nervously shaking. He was so nice thinking "poor, delusional, jw woman."

But I think a person must be slightly willing or ready to have their personal blinders removed.

CofC definitely helped. But the internet sites were "priceless."

Yes, but they are the true religion, they are allowed to do this, everybody else is 'worldly' Armaggedon fodder and have no right to do this. This is called 'true' Christianity and 'agape' love in action.
