Right on again XQ. The Watch Tower's only devise is conceptualization and unchallenged acceptance. The dates don't matter in the least because whatever the Watch Tower Corporation prints or says is enforced with the threat of shunning
The "dates" have mattered to alot of people, including some on this board, who left the Organisation because of erronious dates. Do you think "The Gentile Times Re-considered" by Olof Johnston had any bearing on people seeing hogwash when it was presented to them? Have not many left because of false dates? 1975 was a date and a prophecy. Many left over that erronious date.
You both speak in generalizations without seeing a bigger picture.

No considering you can go to you local library and find the secualar date for the fall of jerusalem. Heck you can find the secular date in the watchtower library. TGR is not such a large factor it is just one of the many exit books that service jws.
1975 was connected to 4026 and has nothing to do with 1914. There is one thing to have a fail prophecy their is another to change an interpetation based on numerology.
You both speak in generalizations without seeing a bigger picture.
I see the big picture JWs feel this date nonsense is understod by the watchtower therefore they dont have to bother understanding it them selves. So if the watchtower changes its understanding a minority will leave early. Most people are dfed for fornication and simply dont come back because they have a new life not because they read GTR. I have heard people say "1919 must be real because it is too complexe for them to have made up."

JWs do not feel any Watchtower approved date is "nonsense". Yet they will mostly remain as Witnesses because NOBODY has understood WT. chronology, really. Yes, a few will see the light and leave but most don't care.

but most don't care.
I was one of the 'most' also......as was 95% of the rest I personally knew. There are too many other reasons to stay "in", at least in a loyal dubs eyes.
I agree, that false prophecies and false dates play a small role in the exit pool of JW's.........but they DO have an effect, and they weaken the organisation in the minds of many who remain in.

Perhaps there is somewhat of a dichotomy happening here? The "real" JW versus the "real" WTS?
In terms of whether 1914 matters to the 'average' JW...very probably not. The vast majority of JWs would be hard pressed to define the Gentile Times; much less to elucidate how the 2,520 years calculations are derived.
But, as far as official WTS doctrine is concerned, 1914 stands high and dry.

I have found the "typical" Witness to be "unreasonable", or . . . . unable to reason (with). The Witness group is just a social club for neurotics and for the socially impaired. On the religious side, the Witness group is a fundamental Christian religion (as XQ says) for the anointed. On the business side, it is a career for business school drop outs who are paid something rather near what they are actually worth.
