That's just now a suggestion!! Geesh! I never tip less than 18%.

Me either. I worked in the restaurant industry for 15 years....I know how much those people depend upon tips for their income.

That being said, I'm was appalled when I used to go out to eat with some of my dub relatives and they rationalize leaving a magazine or tract as a tip in a restaurant reasoning that it was worth more than money. I used to ask for seperate checks but when they persisted and I tired of subsidizing their meal so as to not look like an ass while with them, I just stopped going out and eating with them at all.

You guys may think that this would be a thing of the past......but I still have dub relatives that have to be reminded that that is not appropriate, hence the yearly reminders from mommy Brooklyn on how to behave when in a nice restaurant.

A tip jar says openly:"GIVE ME MONEY".

    Why?

If I get my hair cut isn't the person who cuts it supposed to do a good job? Yes. So, the tip is for what---doing what they are supposed to do anyway?

In a Chinese Buffet place (where you fetch your own food) they have tip jars!

At freakin' STARBUCKS they have tip jars.

A tip is a "special merit" reward to insure promptness of service; it is not a social program to serve the general needs of working people and bring up their standard of living!

If the place where you work does not offer a living wage DON'T TAKE THE JOB!!

It cannot be my responsibility to pay your bills because you accept unrewarding employment.

Having said all that....I DO TIP GENEROUSLY when service is above okay. Hell, I've even tipped when it was ONLY okay. But, I make the tip commensurable to the service.

Very few places I frequent seem to even understand the concept of customer SERVICE!

Yet, I'm supposed to pay the employee handsomely for their ignorance? Grrrrrr.

Think of this as JUSTICE. What is JUSTICE? Getting what you __deserve__.

What you reward; you get more of. To actually reward poor service or indifferent service breeds more of the same.

If the place where you work does not offer a living wage DON'T TAKE THE JOB

It's not always that easy to be picky. When I was putting myself through college I couldn't take a day job because of my class schedule. In my area, that left me with minimum wage night jobs or serving jobs at resturaunts that all (every single one out close to 100 sit-down resturaunts in the vicinity) paid $2.13 an hour plus tips. I took my chances and went to work as a server at Chilis and worked there for 4 years. When I started out, I sucked. I had worked at numerous hard labour jobs as a witness doing things such as building scaffolding, laying concrete driveways, drywall, and landscaping, but waiting tables was definitely the most stressfull job I've ever had, even considering my current job. But no one knows that there is actually a lot involved unless they've been there.

Most people seemed to think servers make minimum wage. I figure the only way to change the apropos is for all servers to go on strike for a higher wage, which would get the word out about what the wage really is. But, of course, the majority don't have the time or the funds to subsidize what it'd take to organize such an effort. And it most likely wouldn't work, because the resturaunts would just hire a brand new batch of people that were willing to work for $2.13 plus tips to replace those that were unhappy. So go figure.

I normally tip $1 for every $5 ( 20% ). I round off based on how close I am to each $5 or I will round up if the service was really good.

I guess the WTS is getting too many complaints about how JWs are leaving literature as a "tip". How the hell will a Watchtower pay the rent?

This tipping thing struck a nerve. Witnesses are such cheap-skates when it comes to "worldly" people...

The way I look at it, you've got to make a distinction between giving tips that are the "custom" for the situation (servers at restaurants and bars/taverns; bellman service at a hotel; concierge help; etc.)and other situations where the tip would be for something "extra" done.....

Witnesses have to be reminded about tipping because, Yes, they're mostly cheapskates, who have a "rules" and "regulations" oriented view of the non-witness world.......drive not higher than the posted speed limit, pay exactly the taxes you owe, do no more than what is legally required of you so as to have more time for "spritual things/service"....and so I think tipping for many witnesses becomes a "Why should I tip, when there's no LAW that requires it?"

I tip at least 20% for restaurants and more for "special" settings, like a favorite tavern, where certain courtesies are extended to me from time to time. What goes around comes around. Sure, I feel like I get the best service possible as a returning customer, but I don't view it as something I don't need to do, because it's not MANDATORY. It's just part of the "cost" of dining out/having a drink, etc.

On the other hand, there's the tip(s) a person gives for "extra" service(s), particularly in situations where tips aren't "usually" received.

    My two cents worth....

I HATE going out with persons for dinner that won't put their tip in., or want to ive 10% when everyone else is putting 20.

Witnesses are not the only cheapskates around. Actually, I'm glad that they reminded the sheep that they should tip in restaurants.

I found this website called www.bitterwaitress.com. They have a feature called the Sh*tty tipper database (STD). Some of the stories on there are beyond belief. I can't believe what these poor waiters and waitresses have to put up with.

When I do go out to eat, I usually tip at least 20%, unless the service is really really bad (which means very rude service), but I only had that once.

There reputation must be at stake, for them to care what you tip.

WOW, is there any aspect in a jw's life that they don't try and control?
