Luke 4:18 (precisely) pictures Jesus reading in the synagogue in Nazareth.

Leaving aside that there was probably no synagogue in Nazareth in the early 1st century, all we have is a Greek text (Luke) quoting a Greek text (the Septuagint of Isaiah) -- whereas synagogue readings are in Hebrew.

Just to say that this text provides little evidence to say if the historical Jesus (if he existed) was literate or not.

I think jesus knew way too much about the scriptures to have been illiterate . He loved to hang around the temple and is shown reading in the scriptures although he didn't write anything besides something he wrote in the sand at some point . I believe the bible writers were legit. The people that copied them are the ones in question .

I find the use (or lack thereof) of the name Jehovah in the Greek Scriptures incredible. It's something that I only began to research after I felt mentally free from the borg. One of the biggest things that upsets me about the mistranslation of the WTS is the name Jehovah inserted everywhere. I think it's because the dubs (incl. my family) use the fact that the name is all over their bible as proof that they are better than everyone else.

Narkissos, thanks again for that KIT reference. I'm going to look that up tonight. As well as some other verses.

I love this question for the dubbie, my current study (its my hobie) refers to " Jesus answers Satan " do not tempt Jehovah your God"

Of course this is from the NWT "new way to twist things."

In fact nowhere in the NT does Jesus specifically "glorify" Gods name. Its a good question if you can keep their feet to the fire.

Lets see what Jesus said at John 17:26

And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them. (AV)

and I made known unto them thy name, and will make it known; that the love wherewith thou lovedst me may be in them, and I in them. (ASV)

"And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them." (NKJV)

I made known to them thy name, and I will make it known, that the love with which thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them." (RSV)

"And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them." (Phillips)

and I made known to them Thy name, and will make known, that the love with which Thou lovedst me in them may be, and I in them.? (Youngs)

Some say this was to make known Gods personality, however the name of God the Hebrew verb YHWH has to do with Gods personality meaning possibly ?the existing one? or ?the one the causes to become?

Gods view was that his people should know is name. e.g all the texts in Ezekiel that say the nations will have to know that my name is YHWH (Jehovah)

It is true that the English version of Jehovah is not the correct pronunciation, but we accept all the other ?J? names in the Hebrew texts. and Jesus is not the way to pronounce his name in either Greek of Hebrew but we use it.

The NWT puts Jehovah in all the places where the writers of the NT quote from the OT. There are a few places where thet should have lest it out.

While on earth Jesus was promoting his fathers will and he was not afraid of controversy so he would have used his fathers name.

No original copies of the writings of the NT exist. Because of the tradition of the Jews not to use Gods name and because the Paul to the Theselonians said that a falling away would come (2:3 ? Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of perdition,?) The word for ?falling away? according to Strongs is apostasia apostasia ap-os-tas-ee?-ah; feminine of the same as 647 ; defection from truth (properly, the state) ["apostasy"]:?falling away, forsake.

There is no proof but it would seem as if those the copied the originals left out the name of God due to the tradition of not using it.

Interestingly, in that lengthy prayer recorded in John 17, Jesus does not utter God's name a single time. One would expect that he'd at least be recorded as saying it on that occasion.

The Society also reasons that Jesus would not be afraid to use God's name around those who thought it blasphemous to utter it. However, the question isn't one of fear, but of simply going with the flow of the prevailing view of the time. The bottom line is that in the available written record we have (the Gospels and Acts 1) of Jesus' actual words, we do not find God's name being used, save for the possibility of the quote from Isaiah 61 at Luke 4. And even that is based mainly on supposition - i.e., 'the divine name was there in the Hebrew text, so Jesus likely used it'.

I think the tetragramaton was there during the first century but again I think the copiests just removed the accent marks and such so people didn't know exactly which vowels to use while pronouncing it . As interpreted by the WTBTS the name jehovah closely matches the statement given to moses when instructed to tell pharoh , I shall prove to be has sent me . It literally translates to he that causes to be .

Did Jesus ever use the name Jehovah?

There's no record of it - the wt made it up, as usual

They don't believe it's a lie because, well, he must have musn't he, we think so, so it must be the case, musn't it - because we are God's chosen speakers - aren't we?

Imagine.......god killing people because they didn't know/use his name. Do most dads want to be called 'dad' or 'father'.....or by their first name? The witnesses actually believe Jehovah is going to slaughter people who haven't come to know his name or.... who know his name but don't use it. Imagine all the little old ladies in this world....sitting in their pews in various churches and praying to the Lord instead of Jehovah........ being slaughtered by the one their praying to because they didn't say his name.....and didn't think they had to.

Any god that stuck on himself who will go to the point of killing his kids for not calling him by his first name needs his ass kicked.
