We already have those here in Ybor City which is Tampa's party district, the camera's also have face recognition to alert authorities to wanted felons, I have no problem with this.

Last year Carlie Brucia was abducted from a car wash near her home, the camera caught it all on film and thanks to that video footage the cops were able to find her killer, how could anyone have a problem with that?

"Also, I believe in most states the Red Light Cam tickets are non-moving violation offenses. You pay a $50 fine and nothing goes on your driving record."

    Evil,

I'm not aware of any state that deems red-light violations to be "non-moving violations." Where I live, it's a point on your record, and a minimum fine of $270.

"Perhaps my stunned disbelief at how easy and casually people are willing to give up control to a govt. entity of "camera cops" made it sound that way. For I am truly shocked (to put it mildly) at this.... I didn't realize how common this perception is. I assume the board to be a microchasm of society at large."

We have common ground here, Evil. I too, am both suprised and saddened at how easily citizens of this country can be convinced that giving up their civil rights, in the name of the Great Satan, terrorism, will somehow make this boogeyman go away. Relinquishing our civil rights will have the same effect on terrorism that the current gun control schemes have on gun violence. Zero.

Terry your own intellectualizing life on such a grand level may be your own intellectual dishonesty. You assume the world around you should fit some sort of intellect. The world and it's people may be simply chaotic and non-thinking.....The mind is a funny thing no? It can justify much. Yet dismiss even more. But we'll save that for your other thread.

I see no alternative that offers as much advantage as the rational framework offers.

I've tried relying on my parents, on Jehovah's henchmen, on scripture, on ad hoc-go-with-the-flow efforts, and, none give me the tractions that comes with the intellectual model.

We float in a sea of opinion, lore, myth, wishful thinking, error, pseudo-science and urban legend that we can't help swallowing a mouthful each time we open it to gasp for oxygen.

What is our first and last line of defense against these bogus factoids? Only a rationally constructed intellect. It won't be impervious. It won't be perfect. But, a door with a lock is better than no door and no lock.

I try to remain open to possibility. But, I don't select possibility purely on the basis of what "appeals" to my sense of what "should be".

Ojectivity is most difficult and entirely unnatural. I want to look into the mirror and see an Adonis. I want to open my mouth and hear Demosthenes. However, self-delusion is a luxury I can ill-afford.

So to with my world view. I suffered a lost of many years of a productive life by adopting (and serving) a phony world view peddled by Jehovah's Watchtower gang. That chain gang is strictly nowhere.

I remain always willing to be wrong. I have to be. Why? Because I was wrong before (while absolutely certain I was right) and it cost me plenty.

    Color me skeptical.

The DEA and other "Alphabet" agencies have done this on need-to- investigate basis for year... Your local big city PD's has done it over the years too....

Old news....... real time following is only practical if you have someone specific to target...as other's have noted Video tape is real nice to have AFTER a crime has happened.

BTW...I am all for it..I think I could be the low -bid contractor for installation!

144001 - Here in North Carolina it is a $ 50 fine and no points..... I wrongly assumed this was probably how most states were handling it.

Terry I did see your other thread...and will be posting my musings there. But since I come from a Taoist / Buddhist background we look at the world quite differently. Is either / or right? Who knows. But I will post to your other thread.

I have this stupid "work" thing I'm doing right now and am limited in my ability to formulate my thoughts / ideas very well.

I think this is the root of the issue. Something much deeper will have to happen to make this go away. A change in thinking, living, respect for others.........loving ones neighbor as we love ourselves.

No offense taken EF, and I appreciate your efforts.

What really is the solution to ending this problem? Another thread.

Side issue but what is this 'cctv as staple of British TV' you keep refering to? The only one I've seen is on a cable network and is from US police cars presented by Troy McLure. Maybe I watch less trash TV than I thought I did...

I didn't know the red light infraction was no points in NC. Any other red light/stop sign running ticket is two points if I remember correctly. I would have thought the same for the camera infraction as well.

One city in NC is going to pull their red light cameras because a judge ruled that ALL money made from these devices was to go to the school system, not just the left over after paying the company that installed, maintained and mailed out the tickets...Since the city couldn't afford to run the cameras themselves they decided to just ditch the whole program. So apparently it wasn't so much about safety as it was about revenue.

And yes, you read that right, the police or the DA doesn't hand out the tickets, the third party camera operating company does.

Since when do private companies have the authority to tell me when I ran a red light and fine me for it? When did the "innocent until proven guilty" ideal of the American justice system get hi-jacked in the name of revenue? In NC you cannot go to court and plead "not guilty" and have a trial or hearing to determine guilt. You first have to pay the fine, no ifandorbuts, then you can challenge the camera evidence. If you can prove your case then you can get a reimbursement.

The red-light camera system as NC has it set up is unconstitutional.

As for "spy" cameras I am against them. Just another way for the government to gain another step to being "big brother". I remember years ago when the seat belt laws went into affect. It was stated then, that cops would not pull people over for not wearing them, but if pulled over for another reason people could get charged with not wearing their belt. As time went by and people got used to that freedom being taken away from them, the police now set up those "click it or ticket" programs aimed at giving tickets to people not wearing seat belts. Bit by bit, freedoms and rights are being lost, partly because we sit back and allow it. Like this "spy" camera issue. If most people don't care, the goverment will continue to infiltrate more and more into our personal lives.
