Ones reading and responding negatively to the article seem to like to deviate from original, consistantly at that.

Personnally, I think that nobody is 100% sane. Everyone has some sort of "mental illness". It's just a matter of drawing the line between what is acceptable and what is not acceptable.

It's easy to play scaremonger with mental health statistics. I think the 1 in 4 statistic needs to be placed in context:

    1. It is talking about "mental illness" without defining which mental illnesses are included and the criteria for deciding seriousness.

    2. It seems to be talking about mental illnesses in general, without regard to severity (e.g., disorders that significantly disrupt people's lives - family, social and employment.) The statistics for severe mental illness are not so high (see below).

    3. There is a difference between lifetime prevalence rates for mental illness and mental health statistics at any one point in time.

    4. Statistics show that the commonest mental health problem for women is major depression (yes, it is a mental disorder, primarily because of its significant impact on the individual's quality of life and a high correlation with suicidal thinking. In New Zealand, major depression has a lifetime prevalence rate of from 6-8%.

    5. The commonest cluster of mental health problems for men are alcohol and substance abuse/dependence disorders. In New Zealand, these have a liftetime prevalence rate close to 30%.

    6. There are other mental illnesses - but the prevalence rates are much lower.

    7. Based on the prevalence rates for the most serious and the commonest mental illnesses, it would be more accurate to say the following:

Less that 1 woman in ten will meet criteria for a major depressive episode at some point in her life that will result in a significant impairment in daily functioning and that may require involvement of mental health profesionals and possibly hospitalization.

About three men in ten will meet criteria for a severe substance abuse/dependence disorder at some point in their life that will result in a significant impairment in daily functioning and that may require involvement of mental health profesionals and possibly hospitalization.

Yeah I believe, 'cause they took it from other sources:

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,158742,00.html

Though I don't see how they are making it any easier for sufferers. Or should I add, they do good job in making sure that percentage stays where it is.

Those stats are probably all the JWs' going for councilling - you can understan why. All the pressure to "shine". Ones' got to crack at some point.

OFC, you make some great points from your own situation. It DOES seem that JWs are more likely to have mental issues than others. And yes, Oz, that's why this site's so popular and you are a regular contributor.
