I didn't make this up, although I wish I had. In "The Lord Of The Rings" movie trilogy, there is a conversation between Bilbo and Gandalf in which Bilbo essentially says that "poor miserable Gollum deserves to die". Gandalf then says one of the wisest things I've ever seen in movie dialog: "Many live who deserve death, and many die who deserve to live. Don't be quick to judge who deserves what. We don't yet know what part Gollum (or by implication, anyone else) will play in future events." If someone could fine the exact quote, please post it.

Would you live your life differently, if you new what happens after death?
by passive suicide inso i had a thought today, that may spark some interesting conversation......
if you were able to die.....totally, and utterly dead.and see what there really is for your own eyes/soul after death......not what the bible says, not what your mom, dad, preacher, rabbi, faithful and discreet slave, conscience ...whatever says will happen....but what really happens......( who can say for sure they know by the way), and then somehow you were brought back,
would you live your life differently?

The question seems to imply that some might be living in a manner which they would be ashamed of under certain circumstances, or that some might be living in a manner which might cause them to miss out on some "reward". Actually, quite a large number of people claim to "know" from personal experience what happens after death. They have "died" on operating tables, or in automobile accidents, left their bodies, observed doctors or EMS workers attempting to revive them, accurately heard conversations between these workers, and seen a little bit of what was going to happen. Obviously, they didn't see everything, because they re-entered their bodies and were "revived". However, I don't recall ever hearing a single negative experience, regardless of the life history of the individual. So, whatever happens after death, it isn't anything BAD. Based on the available information, I cannot see any reason to live my life differently.

SCI FI fans - looking for a story I read 35 yrs ago
by hamsterbait ini read this in a collection i got from the school library.. a man wakes up from cryogenic sleep, to see a painted bust.
he is restrained.. turns out he is the last human, and the robots have attempted to keep him alive by painting a statue so he is not shocked by their appearance.. the lead robot becomes known as "sister.
" the man explains puns, and extends its programming for original thnking.

Harrison also wrote an interesting "alternate history" trilogy in which dinosaurs had never become extinct, but had continued to evolve, achieving intelligence and bio-technology, BUT mammals had also continued to evolve (unlikely, as most all the ecological niches were already occupied by reptiles, but it did make a good story), and humans eventually came into conflict with the dominant dino-people. "West of Eden" was the title of the first book.

While this is not the story you are looking for, it is similar: A technician in a nuclear lab is present when something goes wrong, and some radiation escapes. He is transformed into a statue of himself, made of some absolutely unweathering material. No one can figure out how to turn him back into a human again, so he is set up as a memorial, and the rest of the human race continues for several hundred thousand years, then becomes extinct. Other creatures on the planet also continue to evolve, and eventually become intelligent enough to have culture and technology of a sort. Finally, the effects of the radiation wear off, and the man wakes up as the only living human on the planet, now ruled by various dog-people, cat-people, and others. The name of the book was "The Stone God Awakens", and I remember enjoying it.

Some friends and I watched two recent episodes of Dr. Who recently, "The Impossible Planet", and "The Satan Pit". Both episodes featured an alien race called the Ood, who were very Cthulhu-esce in appearance, although it was spoiled a bit by their identical grey "Chairman Mao" uniforms.

Would you have been born if your parents were NOT J-dubs?
by Highlander ini think it's very safe to say that i would not have been born if one or both of my parents were never jw's.
mom and dad met because they were witnesses.
if not for this cult, they wouldn't have met and i(their armagedden baby) would never have existed.

If you consider that the egg from which you grew already existed, then whether or not that particular egg which grew into you actually did so depends more on whether or not that egg was fertilized when the opportunity came. Each egg only has a narrow window of time to be fertilized. So, whether YOU were born, or not, depends more on WHEN your mother was with a man, and not so much WHO that man was. If a different man had fertilized the egg which grew into you, you would perhaps have different characteristics, or not, depending on how much you take after your mother rather than your father. However, the resulting person would still have come from the same egg, regardless of who performed the fertilization, and therefore would still have been "you".

How Much and for How Long Did You Love Being In The 'Truth'?
by sweet pea inreading tijkmoo's original post about his experience (well worth a read all you newbies...) it made me think back to my experience of being a witness.
up until 4 months ago i had spent my whole life loving being a witness (apart from twinges of discontent when a young girl being left out of attending friends birthday parties) and was a faithful sister who pioneered when possible and was a member of the quickbuild team in my single days.
i felt it was the truth and there was no where else to go.

I wasn't raised in the org, but began attending when young. At first, I looked forward to meetings, but never enjoyed field service. Gradually meetings became repetitive, and I realized that what was being taught was neither what I believed nor even in agreement with history or science. I was in and active for roughly 15 years, then began to fade.

Have you ever read "Just So Stories" by Rudyard Kipling? Gen 2:18 (and other parts of Genesis as well) is exactly like one of those. They were "modern" folk tales explaining, for example, how elephants got their trunks (because a single ancestral elephant got its short nose caught by a crocodile, who stretched it out until it was long. All subsequent elephants have longer noses).
