san diego (ap) the jehovah's witnesses were ordered to pay $13.5 million to a southern california man who said he was molested as a child by a church member.. a san diego judge ruled wednesday that the church's governing body covered up years of sexual abuse by a member who later became an elder.. superior judge joan lewis said actions of the watchtower bible and tract society of new york were "reprehensible and reckless," u-t san diego reported friday (http://bit.ly/1uf519r ).. jose lopez, who was awarded the money, sued the group, alleging that he was molested in 1986 at age 7 by a member of the spanish congregation in the linda vista area of san diego.. lopez said the elders suggested gonzalo campos as his bible teacher even though they knew he had molested at least one other boy, the suit contended.

Darth, I have read dozens of the press releases on the award and the AP one is my favorite so far because it "Dog Piles" all the other cases together in a half page story. BAMMMMM
Attached to the JW Facts Brochure, it could REALLY SHAKE UP 90% of JWs. Like they say "You can't unring a bell". That info would be sure to crawl around in an active JWs brain for some time.

im 15 and a couple weeks ago i confessed to my parents that i didn't want to be a jehovahs witness anymore and also that i was bisexual.
i had just gotten back from an eating disorder clinic and my parents decided to put me back in school (i was homeschooling before).
PLEASE tell your doctor your true feelings. At 15 your entire life is in front of you...DO NOT put a label on yourself or box yourself in....or let others put a label on you or put your in a box. You are not yet "Cooked"...and you may never be. Reach out to others and open your mind to the infinate possibilities of your future life. LEARN. READ. GROW.

i hope i don't come across as judgemental but having read a lot on the current child abuse cases and the different threads on here, i am left wondering why on earth a parent of an abuse victim would go to an elder with the problem first and not straight to police?.
as a parent myself i know that if anything like that happend to my child (this applies to when i was still an active jw as well as now) i would not hesitate in going to the authorities as soon as i found out, it wouldn't of crossed mine or my husbands mind to go to an elder.
maybe after we had reported it but definitely never as the first port of call.
Good question. Great answers. Raised in the BORG, by my teens and early 20s I BELIEVED Holy Spirit truly directed everything in the organization and the elders somehow would always be directed to do the right thing. Bethel knocked that silly belief out of me.
As an Elder I had ADULTS ask my opinion on all kinds of crazy stuff....as if I had "Secret Knowledge" or was some kind of PHD on everything. They looked shocked when I said "I have no idea". Weird, but part of being in a cult I guess.
I knew three JW Attornies in private practice. All three confided WTBTS was CONSTANTLY asking for PRO-BONO work. It almost bankrupted them. All three got regular JOBS so they could tell Watchtower they were "unavailable". They had been sucked dry and were exhausted.
I asked one his biggest problem with JWs. His reply surprised and bothered me at the time. He had been "shocked and embarrased many times in court by "JWs not revealing all the facts and LYING to HIM their Attorney- BEFORE trials". He was "tired of having egg on his face" during trials.
i don't smoke anything but i know many that do--- some frequently, most infrequently.. personally, i don't see much difference between drinking alcohol and pot use.. should pot be legalized?.
Regulate and tax it like wine.
i heard from a reliable source that a one-day assembly in arizona last weekend had a "cost" to the publishers of $17,000.. predictably, the elders were nice enough to obligate the attendees to a $6,000 donation to wt before the assembly "costs" (i.e.
"rent/extortion) were even met.
$11,000 rent plus $6000 in extra "donations".
D O C Ha Ha- I remember an elders meeting at the Assembly hall when I DARED to raise my hand and ask a clarification of some wild expenses and non standard accounting. DAGERS FLEW FROM THE EYES OF THE D.O., C.O. and City overseer. How dare anyone ask a reasonable question.- Of course they would not answer the question. The looks on some Elders faces ranged from" whoo boy he's in for it" to APOSTATE!
I was still a believer at that point and didn't understand simple Watchtower math $500 + $600 = YOU OWE US not $1,100 but $11,000 )
Later I dared to ask a Circuit Overseer why don't we just use the local Fair Grounds for $1200 for the weekend rather than drive 4 hrs and stay in a hotel to spend 5-10 times that much at the assigned JW assembly Hall. - I got the same eye daggers & and a terse remark!! LOL
with many more cases in the offing the zalkin lawfirm will press the issue again and again and force gerrit loesch to testify.

hello everyone just wanted to give a litte update on my leaving jws.
i was an active ms up till the beginning of this year and things were going pretty good up till now.
my wife is active and that has been tough but we were managing.. two months ago my older brother passed of a sudden heart attack.
So sorry for so many changes. Try to step back and relax a bit, take a small trip, have some fun. Really consider a Mental Health pro. - sometimes just talking out loud in a safe environment clarifies things. Having a heart attack will complicate things further.
Perhaps your can help underwrite your wife enhancing her job skills with a certificate course at the local JC while still living together? In 3-6 months she might be self supporting and things might be different. Being busy mentally might help her develop some reasoning skills as well.
