I've had JW relatives try and get me to put up large groups of people that I've never even met. I refused and that made them unhappy. I'm not sure why they even needed a place to stay, but I know they were from out of the country. They can never visit alone; they always have to bring "a friend". I guess we aren't worth worthy of their undivided attention since we are "worldy". Agnes

No Hospitality- for Int'l Delegates! remember?...
by upside/down ina few years ago while in south orange county, socal there was an announcement made.
they needed volunteers to open their homes to our bro's and sis' that were coming in as international delegates.
this was supposed to be a showing of solidarity to our brethren elsewhere and a showing of jw unity and brotherly love (barf).. however, hardly anyone volunteered their homes!

They say they don't celebrate Xmas, but...???
by JH inevery year, on dec 25th, witnesses in our area gather at a book study group, and they have a dinner together.
although they say that they don't celebrate christmas, why do they gather on dec 25th like catholics do and share dinner together?
i'm sure that neighbors think that it's a christmas gathering.. i know that there isn't any christmas decorations there, or gifts being given, but i find it odd, that every year, some book study will organize a dinner on december 25th.

The JW's I know celebrate the holidays as as much as anyone else, but usually not with their "worldy relatives", but with their "new family". Agnes

Which is worse: shunning by JW or by Non-JW relatives?
by GermanXJW inyesterday, on the first christmas holiday, my family and me were invited at my father in law's house.
he has never been a jw and we had no contact but because he shunned us for being jw.
i find this as offensive as being shunned by a jw - maybe even worse because he decided personally to have no contact.
-

I don't think one is any worse than the other. Shunning is cruel. JW's aren't allowed to associate with "worldy people" and perhaps the non-jw's take offense at that and figures why bother with them since they have made their choice.

Yes, have some relatives who never bought a home or any of the other things you mention, but they sure spend a lot of time traveling...doesn't that cost money too? I guess they would find some way to justify it though. It's all a matter of priorities.

JW's can't associate w/worldly types but can take thier money???
by Agnes ini understand that jw's aren't supposed to associate with worldy types, but they can do business with them right?
just seems sort of contradictory.
"i can't associate with you but i can take your dirty money and will pretend to like you to get it".

Thanks for all the responses.
Scully, thanks for the welcome too.
I thought there must be a loop hole to justify the illogical behavior. I know some JW's that will not give you a second look until they have something to sell you. I will not contribute my hard earned money to such a person be it charity or otherwise. Yes and I have seen some active JW's even welcome smokers and people with the American flag decals on their cars into their homes as long as they're giving them money. We have some in the neighborhood who borrow constantly from the "dirty worldly types", that is apparently acceptable too.
Yes, you will probably do the right thing because that is what is good and natural. Their bad behavior is not natural. We have some relatives that are having some financial difficulty and health issues, it will be intersting to see how much support they get from their "Brothers & Sisters"! I agree with you, some do seem to have a sense of entitlement.
Ohio cowboy: I won't be buying any of them presents for special occasions any time soon!
Kls: I guess it would be hard to not accept money from "worldly" people if you have a business where "worldly" people are coming to you, but to purposely "love bomb" us in pursuit of our money is in my opinion tacky and it pisses me off too. I'm a "dirty worldly" person and I even have that much conviction and principles! On a few occasions when I was generous with a few of them, they were almost in disbelief that one of us could possibly be so kind and generous as they only view themselves.
Gopher: Those are the very reasons I will purposely not give to them, other than relatives. It usually goes against my generous nature, but this really irks me. Reminds me of a stingy child that just takes and never shares.
Corvin & Talesin: That is unbeleivable!

Food Drives, did you donate when you were a JW?
by codeblue intoday our postal carriers are having a food drive.. i was showing my hubby the things i rounded up and asked about giving something else...he said...no...i said: "well, why shouldn't we, we have plenty"..he then said "sure".. we then had a discussion about if jw's ever give on such occasions for food drives.
i for one, did not, and i am ashamed to say that too.. so, did you give to food drives when you were a jw?.

Stephanus, you donate canned non-perishable food and put it in a bag by your mail box on the designated day and your postman picks the bags up when they deliver your mail.

Turn away from these wicked ways!
by Proud Witness inwell as you would have guessed from my name, i am a proud witness and i feel obliged to preach to you about the promises that our wonderful creator, jehovah god, has promised each and every one of us, of any race or background.
i know that you already know what he has told us through his word, but i am curious to wonder why you have chosen to jump off the narrow road which leads to everlasting life.
is it because you have had a bad experience in god's organization?
