Guards at Stadium Conventions during Song and Prayer

when did the wt start having guards come out during the song and prayer at stadium conventions?

i noticed this at a convention in san diego, right before the song begins, a bunch of "brothers" come out and stand at key positions facing the seats, and scan the audience!

they remain until after the prayer, and they do not bow their heads during the prayer, but keep scanning the audience.

Gosh! Guarding the stage! You guys got all the fun jobs. About as close as I ever got was the assignment with another brother to station ourselves outside the Women's bathroom and watch for perverts. We were told that men were hanging around the ladies restrooms trying to sneek a peak whenever they could.

And see what? I thought. Young and middle aged women fussing with their young kids? Maybe catch a glimpse of women applying makeup? Woooooweeee. Actually, there was more to see near the stairwells!

At any rate we never saw anyone acting "weird". So we just visited with each other the whole time.

okay, so i've been trying to figure out what i can do to help jws out.

obviously, no one can force someone to think, but sometimes a thought-provoking question can get the gears turning.

so i hit upon this idea of placing ads in a weekly newspaper here in seattle.

A man went into a store to buy a shirt. He was directed to a display rack. The shirts were all plaid. They were all of one size. He was told not to look at any other racks, the seller knew which shirt was best for him. Finally he selected a plaid shirt. Did this man make a choice?

What does free will imply?

Simple allegory, but it may raise awareness.

i know that the issue of the man being beheaded by the iraqis has been discussed already but they just played the sound of the beheading on talk radio (shawn hannity).

this is absolutely horrible.....the sound of him screaming just makes me ill.

Just wanted to butt in here, after reading four pages. I'm of the opinion that Shaun Hannity is a entertainer type, a showman if you will, that happens to espouse some conservative values. He doesn't necessarily speak for me, or most conservatives. At times he's a bullying jerk, and I can't watch him. Just like O'Reilly. But at times, like anyone, makes a good point or two.

Just wanted to toss in my two cents regarding ol' Shaun.

Got a visit from a "sister" today

ok, so its been five years since i've been a technically, active jw.

an older lady came by to see me today.. she heard about my surgery last week and was in the area so she dropped by to say hello and wish me well.

no jw talk at all till the end of the conversation.

so there i was, entering the grocery store.

i walked in at the doors and they have the racks of free newspapers,.

.....there they were, awakes, half a dozen or so.

Wow! I really liked Concerned Mama's idea! Writing that website address and comment directly on the cover. So cool.

But I think I can even go it one better.

Why not stick a pre-printed label that has that same message on it right across the cover. I'll even make some for anyone who wants them. No charge. Just PM me.

Of course, you would have to have a small supply of them with you when you happened to come across these mags. So maybe the idea isn't so great.

What was the silliest thing they told you NOT to do?

there was some really piddily-crap that i remember.. for instance, when i was about 17 toe-rings became popular, and one of the sisters bought one....wore it to the kh during the summer with her sandals.

my best friend in the hall wanted one, which of course caused this huge debate about whether it would be okay 'in jehovah's eyes', and didn't it go against the scripture that counsels women against "bodily adornment", blah-blah-blah.

Oh! I almost forgot.

Around that same time my '57 Chevy BelAire was adorned with one of those vinyl stickers. It was in the shape of a flower. (flower power, hippie influence?) At any rate my local PO told me if I was going out in field service that Sunday, he wouldn't be riding with me because of it.

Around 1969 or '70 I was advised not to wear pastel colored shirts with my tie. Gotta be white! God's watching.

Religious meetings once a week=enough

of all the religions i know of, the one that is the most time consuming, is the jw religion.

it's not just the fact that there is a meeting every 2 days, but these meetings have to be prepared ahead of time.

being a jw, is almost a full time job.

It's my opinion that spiritual or weighty matters need to be reflected upon over some time. Digested, if you will. So if you go to church and hear a really profound sermon, you need some time to gather in the information, think about it, try to see where it fits into your own life.

Meetings five times a week are only to bombard you with so much information (most of it "tired" and over repeated, nothing new messages) so as to keep you from actually thinking. I think that's the true WT motivation.

Finally, if you're going to say that we attend (ed) meetings to satisfy our "spiritual hunger", then isn't it also true that not all of us are equally hungry. Some people are clearly more pious than others. I personally don't feel the need to go live high up on a mountain in some sort of enclave to be nearer to God. But there are those that do. Good for them! But just don't go telling everyone they have the same spiritual "itch" to scratch.
