I thought these articles are pretty interesting too. I'm reading a book about Armageddon movements (Expecting Armageddon: Essential Readings in Failed Prophecy, edited by Jon R. Stone) and how they attempt to regain lost credibility through prophetic reinterpretation. I could see a lot of what is mentioned in these articles in that context.

Also, I had always wondered (questioned, but not out loud) how they could be so certain Christ came and identified THEM as "the" F&DS, if there even is such a thing, meant in the way JWs interpret it.

sometimes i look at the world and i think "man, how much longer can it go on?

" sometimes i think perhaps armageddon will come in my life-time.

the one scripture i always think of is the one in revelation where it says that jehovah "will bring to ruin, those ruining the earth.

I got this really great book about Armageddon recently... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/104-0436594-2612740. I have only just started it, but already it's becoming more clear how these movements work, the ones that are centered around the idea of Armageddon. This book is a compilation of essays written on a few sociological/psychological studies that have been done on Armageddon movements since around the 1950s. Jehovah's Witnesses is covered extensively.

I mention this because I feel it helps to read outside sources to put things more into perspective. I still haven't read Crisis of Conscience yet, and want to read it eventually, but before I do that, I wanted to look at something from an "outside" source that relies more on scientific observation.

now for those of you who do not believe me to be jehovah's self-appointed spokesman,, just ask jehovah for yourself,, if he don't answer you,, it means youv'e probably pissed him off,, and in that case he ain't gonna answer you so you'll just have to take my word for.

Frankie, I thought that was great. I think it was meant to be tongue-in-cheek and I completely agree with the sentiments behind it. Show me you're up there, God!

I think we all need to accept there are some on the forum who strongly believe in God or Christianity and some who have a bit more trouble with the "faith" thing. I totally get it.

What JWs think when they visit "apostates"

a friend of mine was recently disfellowshipped (lets call him john, false name but serves the purpose of this).

he was a ministerial servant within the cong (heading for elder).

anyway, he got back in touch after the "fall".

That is really a great story. I like to think there's still a little voice of reason inside each JW that is just asleep or being ignored. Sometimes it takes something like this to wake it up.

Who do you blame for the time you wasted as a DUB?

think of all the time and energy you wasted sitting in meetings, going door to door and refraining from making friends and having enjoyable association with non dubs.

think about how much of your finite life is lost to you because you were a witness.

think about how foolish you looked, hanging on to the false teachings and empty hopes for the future.

Little Freedoms

now that you're no longer a jw, do you wish people "good luck" or say "bless you" when they sneeze?

wish people a "happy easter" voluntarily and not just mumble "same to you" when they wish it to you?

i do, and every time i do i get a little thrill and smile to myself because it's just one more thing i now have the freedom to do, and it's a little thing but i think it shows care and respect for my fellow humans.

Yeah, it's great. I've been doing all that stuff for a long time. I got on the phone this morning with one of my friends to wish her a happy birthday. It's a nice feeling. Ah, the freedom to express everyday kindnesses!

Before, I would be focused on finding ways to have people not notice how I'm not responding "normally".

PS - I think the birthday rules are there to force JWs to sever all ties with outsiders. Some people get seriously offended if you don't recognize their birthdays. I've had friendships break down because of missed parties, and they knew I was a witness, but couldn't get over that I missed "their" birthday party! And all for nothing - there really is no scriptural reason not to celebrate this.

the ancient isrealites had about 600 rules in the mosaic law which they had to keep.. i reckon that jw's are expected to keep more rules than that.. what's your favourite??.

why do you think that jws are so against putting all their beliefs down into a creed?

is it because they realised it would change so often?.

i always remembered in the das that they would criticise other christian denominations for having creeds, but if you asked them their faith in a nutshell, would they be able to tell you?

I think most of those types of things are fabrications, including many of their testimonials.

About the time wasted- I don't like to think about that. The important thing is I'm ok now. I'm a stronger person now. I have learned to trust my instincts and the importance of power and knowledge.

About the trouble in my family - I know that's not your question - but I do put blame here - on the organization and not on any of my family.

New To The Board

i just wanted to introduce myself and tell everyone that i have enjoyed many of the posts.

i wish that this resource was available 7 years ago when i walked away from the organization, it would have helped my transition a great deal.

i also wanted to say that it is enjoyable to come to a forum that is not on an angry rant about the organization on a constant basis.
