Should people try to speak the language of the land when visiting?

as most of you know, i live in quebec (90% french) and i was at the convenience store a moment ago.. there was a lady from ontario in her 50's who stopped at the conveniece store to ask the clerc for directions in english.

the girl at the cash tried her best to speak english and give her the right directions.

then a client came in the convenience store and saw the lady talking in english.

When I was trying to learn a little Spanish before travelling to Mexico, both my sons told me to stop! (While laughing hysterically and rolling on floor!) Both my sons took Spanish in school and can understand it better than speak it...but they seemed to speak enough for us to get by on when we were in Mx. I can get my point across in any language however! (My sons tell me that speaking louder doesn't make them understand me anymore than before...but they do know that I want something!!! Ha!) I wish we didn't have the language barrier...it's hard enough to understand different accents!!! (Southern verses Northern)

What Would It Take

a few months back i remembered a newbie asked in this forum what would it take for a current witness to "go over the edge".

in other words what would it take, personally as a witness, to stop going to meetings or to just quit being a jw?

what would you have to learn or see?

As you know there are about 8000 or so remnant left here on earth. They are all getting pretty old. What happens when they all die off before Armageddon comes around?

Since you state that you became a Witness in 1992, you probably don't realize that to older JW's this number is erroneous. Basically, it was stated that all the 144,000 group had been picked by 1914...there was thought to be a secondary group that would be saved but not be in that group. When, that came and went, adjustments were needed...it was thought that some of that group that proved unworthy had to be replaced and that was done by early 1930's. When I was growing up in this religion, it was thought that if someone new started partaking, well, that was probably a mistake...If a young person partook, everyone was talking behind his/her back and feeling sorry that somehow they just didn't understand they were NOT of the annointed class. The number of 144.000 had dropped to just a few thousand by the 1980's(?)...and had us all believing that it was all but over...(at least those of us who stayed on after the 1975 letdown) We were down to the last few seconds in this world. Now that figure is back up to 8000??? How long can they keep this up??? Trust me, most of those partaking now are not that old!!!

I would like to say here that I took a long hard look at what the Bible does say about annointing and I don't see (now that I read without the JW's slant) how in the world they came up with that understanding. Try reading the Bible without using the publications for a little while...it's absolutely amazing what it says verses what they say it says!

I kind of gave a brief history without looking up the dates, but I think I'm close enough to at least help you see how they keep changing the "light" and dangling that carrot out there.

Mom Makes Daughter Stand on Street Corner

i'm rather conflicted on this.

what do you guys think?

does this qualify as psychological abuse?

CHL...are you saying that taking you to the elders was a good thing or a bad thing?

I am torn somewhat on this girl being put on public exhibition like that. It does sound extreme to say the least!

I had a situation that my junior-high son was caught up in and the results were not good. A "worldly" girl from school came over to our house and my son slipped her in his bedroom and she hid in the closet. Her parents were out of town and she was staying with a girlfriend. She was like a wild horse needing some space to run! Her mother was a teacher at the junior-high and demanded her daughter be perfect. Anyway, there was a party down the street from us and she slipped away from her friend and knew my son and came to hide out for a while and then was going to meet some other friends later on.

Well, the parents of her friend soon came knocking on my door to see if we had seen her. I said "no", not realizing that she was in my house. But I had the presence of mind to check with my son just to make sure, as they were worried sick about her. I could tell that my son was hiding something from me, so I went to check his room out, opened up the closet door and there she stood. She had that deer in the headlight look!

I calmly asked everyone to sit down and we discussed the situation thoroughly.

The next day, her mother came over and accused my son/her daughter of having sex. I got hot over that!!! I told her that she was pushing her daughter away and she had better get a handle on this before she did permanent damage. With her daughter standing there, she informed us that she was taking her to be checked to see if she was still a virgin and she would press charges against my son if she wasn't!

What a horrible thing to put your young daughter through. I tried to convince her that I believed them when they said that had not happened, but to no avail. She went ahead. She was still a virgin...can you imagine the humiliation of that exam??? The next day her daughter ran away from home...I still don't know if she ever came back.

What works for one may not work for another. This teacher didn't have a clue what her daughter was about!!! How sad!

it all started one day when i was in the laundy room and i heard my husband pull up in the driveway, shut his door, unlock the door to the house, shut the house door, so i go down to greet him ( with a big kiss and hug, as i always do

anyway i get down stairs and he is not there so i assumed that he was already out feeding comet!

Also, keep in mind that what you tell them confidentially will probably not remain so. Somehow, it always seems to leak out! So go in there with the idea that you are speaking to the whole congregation and maybe the entire circuit as well!

I had a strange incident happen to me last week...I was watching the show "Ghost Hunters" ...it was about 11 p.m. and my phone rings. My mom asked me if I had just been at her house. (I don't live very far) I said "no", and she proceeded to tell me that my dad and her both heard someone come in the front sunroom, (which leads into their living room) and open the storm door just like they were coming in the house. They had turned on the outside lights and waited for what they thought was me to come in. No one did. She was pretty nervous about it...so I said for them to look around while I was still on the phone...the outside door had been opened and they both swear they had shut and locked it.

She asked other family members if they had been by that night and no one had. Weird!!!

It didn't really scare me but un-nerved me a little!!!
