I'll bet a lot of JW's will now feel less guilt for cracking open a cold one. Jus the article needed to justify brother elder's having that extra one.

Austin Powers ... tell me when I should be laughing please
by Simon ini'm sorry, but i've just watched one of the austin powers movies for the first time after hearing many people rave about them and imo it's almost as bad as "armageddon" that is on the other side.. i thought it was supposed to be a comedy?!
it is kind-a like the poorest "carry-on" movie ever .
the only saving grace that has stopped me switching over is heather graham ... who is hot !!

Austin Powers was not exactly my cup of tea, but I enjoyed some of the outrageous characters tho. I much prefer Mike Meyers in his first film, So I Married An Ax Murderer. Funny stuff. He also plays his father in that film, a scottish guy who loves the Bay City Rollers. My kids and I so relate to the same kind of comedy. We all laugh at the same time at the same stuff while watching a movie or tv show. My wife, however, rarely laughs at the same stuff I laugh at . . .

Beautiful Artwork to Look at!
by Dolllie inwe were discussing this on a previous post!
i just had a chance to look at the "april 8, 2004" awake, with several articles on moses>.
again, i must say, speaking as an artist & an art teacher at the college level, "this pictures/drawings are of excellent quality".

Interesting. The WTBTS has a history of horrendous artwork. They have improved alot over the years, however.
Dave Malone, a very accomplished artist and former JW, was summoned to Bethel in the early 80's to consult with the art and photography depts to help improve the overall quality . . . especially since the WTBTS was on the verge of acquiring brand new state of the art digital imaging equipment and begin printing everything in the four-color process. No point in having such nice equipment if your artists and photographers suck, thus, Malone was asked to consult.
Malone referred to those who worked at Bethel as "hobby artists" and had very little respect for their ability. Maybe Malone's 2 week consulting trip to Bethel had some effect on the quality of the artwork afterall.

A Question Of Manners.
by Englishman ini'm looking for some feedback here.
hl and i like to socialise sometimes, and this often results in us hosting small parties for a few friends.. often our friends reciprocate, and then we enjoy being guests instead of being hosts.. but we keep encountering a dilemma.
one set of friends like us to visit them for afternoon bbq's or sometimes for evening dinner parties.. now, no problem with dinner parties, but if say we go to a bbq at around 4.30, they expect us to remain with them for the entire evening right through until around 11 pm or midnight, the same time as we'd stay to if we went to a late dinner party.. personally, i've had enough at about 9 pm, that's 5 hours, so we like to leave and have a pint or two in the pub on the way home.. now this makes them quite angry and they say that we're being anti-social because we are off to the pub instead of spending the whole evening with them.. i maintain that if you go to tea or a bbq in the late afternoon, then it's quite acceptable to depart earlier than if you went to a late dinner party.. what do you think?.

I agree with you Englishman. I recently went to a BBQ and was really quite ready to leave after 4 hours. Sometimes it depends on the company, too.

Let's face it. The main reason to be a JW is the feeling of belonging.
by new light indon't you agree?
the doctrine part has its appeal for some people, but most join and stay because it feels good to belong to something larger than yourself.. realizing this may make it easier for some to stay away.
that longing you may feel at first to join them or go back to them is not holy spirit, it's just the natural human inclination to belong to a group.

I do agree somewhat. It is so good, however, to wake up one day and realize you are larger than the organization and they can no longer influence so many aspects of breathing.
[edited to say] On second thought, I now belong to this board . . . hmm . . . I just might need a 12-step group to help me stop being a part of groups.

(((((Little Witch))))) you did not hurt me. There is nothing to forgive .
I am confused now . . .
"I am not, nor have I ever been a jw . . . "
VS.
To suggest that I should not be on jwd, or that I have no valid opinion after 16 years of jw upbringing is well....mistaken. I have walked many miles in "those shoes", and I feel my views are valid.
And . . .
"It is just that you contradicted yourself . . . "
I contradicted myself?
"I didnt expect you to take it so personal."
My saying, "Little Which . . . glad you have the monopoly on correct viewpoints" is not taking anything personal.
"I use this font so I can SEE what I am typing"
I am sarcastic by nature, and I still am not aware of what contradictions I made. I will go back and edit the post to show Courier font so that you can see what I am typing. Be kind and point those out to me so that I can adjust my thinking, please.
Best Regards,
Corvin
