as i mentioned last night at our mini-apostafest supper, my posting rate is like my car mileage - i've had the car 4 years and don't even have 30,000 kilometres on it yet.. now i have 1,000 posts and it took ages to get here!
i don't know how some of you do it, i mean, 10,000 posts is like trying to reach the end of the universe without warp speed!.

so, who's going to the convention this year?
are you going to attend all of it?
the last year i went to the convention, i only went for one day.
Going this year? I cannot imagine a bigger waste of time.
The only reason to go would be to place some illegal contraband (apostate literature). That would be a bit of a kick. However, do any of us REALLY believe that that would make any impact, other than fueling the Witness persecution conspiracy?
EyeDrEvil
how many times did you hear that before you were baptized?
i got a little tired of it when someone called me and said that.
this was the first sign of the control thing.
This was the first sign of the control thing. "We are watching you".
I agree with you 100%. Kind of creepy. Especially when you consider that IF they had an honest interest in you as a person, maybe they could frame their interest in you in a different context than "meeting attendance" or "field service." Such a narrow focus made me ill and very leary about my relationships at the Hall. Maybe that is why I never really fit in.

okay, i know it is corny, but my daughter graduates college tomorrow, may 29th with a bachelor of arts degree, major fine arts.
she is an accomplished student and painter.
she took an extra year because while a full-time student she also worked 20-25 hours a week.. .
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!
FELICITATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
congratulacions!!!!!!!!!

What a proud day this will be!!!!
i know its stupid of me to post a new topic when i haven't finished reading my first thread, but i wanted to know stuff about any current jws that may be here.
you don't need to reply if you want to tell me off or say something o/t.
you can use my first thread for that, since that thread is more general.
Oh Boy.
Here we go again!

P.S.I agree with you, Blondie. Not reading the first thread and running on to a new universe posed here is irresponsible as well as disrespectful to all those who responded to your first post.
hi, i have been looking on the boards for a few months now, and it has had a profound effect on me.
thanks to all who i have spoken to, who have really helped me.
i was been bought up a jw.when i was 23 i left home and started 'living', got involved with a worldling, who i tried to convert so that we could be accepted.
Welcome Chok!
Welcome to real life. The "world" is not nearly as scary and evil as the WT painted it to be!!!
You are in excellent company. Keep on posting!

p.s. my wife has the same life experience. She just turned 40, and celebrated her first ever birthday (a huge fete -- over 60 non-JW friends came to her "coming out party"). Our boys are 11 and 9. We too wanted them to see that there was so much more to life than the surreal life of a JW. LIFE IS SO MUCH BETTER!
Hey DFW,
You might want to see your eyecare professional if there have been changes in your floaters recently! Floaters are normal (either from embryonic left-overs OR from the normal aging process), BUT if there are changes in appearance, location, intensity, frequency, you should get them looked at by a professional. Especially if they are accompanied with flashing lights in the eyes.
In my office, we see these all the time, and usually they are benign. However, if we have a patient call reporting changes, we always bring them in so that I can check them out. Worse case scenario is that the changes can be a direct link to an impending or fresh retinal detachment (= a very bad thing). These need immediate attention.

i have always wondered why it cost so much to "rent" the space used for local special assembly days and circuit assemblies.... in our case, the society built a large assembly hall, on donated farm land (= free), in the middle of some corn fields 20 miles outside of columbus, ohio... the property has a couple of apartments where some of the travelling overseers live, who help with the upkeep of the building.
cleaning the building was taken care of because of our "privilege" to go out the day before the assembly to get it in good shape (free housekeeping and maintenance work).. so, the society owns the building.
it was built on free land.
Blondie,
SO, when they were saying that the fees were generated from expenses of that weekend get-together, it was NOT in fact for operating costs, but rather a "franchise fee" paid to the WTS for using their "new light." Rather dishonest, if you ask me! If they had just said that they wanted to send a kajillion dollars to the Society for the worldwide work, then at least that would have been shooting straight.
WHAT???? The Watchtower Society LIED to ME??? Oh, yea, just another episode in the life of the king-Dumb Halls... why should I be surprised...

SO, the Society owns the building. It was built on free land. It was maintained by free labor.
YET, a 2 day ASSembly costs more than $7000..... Why $7000? Where does this number come from? I never knew electric and heating/AC cost so much!!! Of course, we never would have passed the collection plate (as they do in..[cue scary music]... "Christiandom"....), but the announcement from the podium was always too obvious --- "Brothers, at this time, we are short $5000 in donations for this weekend harvest waste of time...)
It always seemed dishonest to me. Any thoughts?

we all know the big problems with the wts, but what was the first thing that made you realise there were problems with the organisation ?
with me it was realitivly small stuff like an 8 year old getting baptised and a comment my best mates made about another of our friends asking if we should be hanging round with her as she might be bad assciation (she had just been reproved, but they had been mates 20 years).. .
how ever the first time i ever thought something was really wrong was when i was about 11 and my grand farther died, and mu mum wouldn't go to the funeral, i remeber thinking that surely it was better to say good bye properly than worry about if the service was in a church.. .
For me, from the start, it didn't set with me that in a world with so much diversity, from the local level, all the way to the international level... HOW in the world could there be only ONE WAY to celebrate and worship God -- Wouldn't that same God make allowances for differences in: local/societal norms, cultural standards, individual preferences, family upbringing, etc.... That stayed in the back of my brain for years....
Then, when I just couldn't make sense of it anymore (based on seeing the track record of "God's people), I cracked open a few books -- Awakening of a Jehovah's Witness (D. WIlson) and Crisis of Conscience (R. Franz).
Glad I finally did listen to that little voice in the back of my brain saying, "WAKE UP!"
