Why do some here refer to themselves as "Apostates"?
by Netty inthe only real definition of apostate i ever had was from being raised a witness.
so, i have this idea that it is an evil, wicked thing.
because of that i dont like to call myself an apostate.

Hehe, i feel ya Magick
I think in the JW mind, apostate=dangerous.
Witnesses believe that "apostate" is by far the most evil word, the most evil type of person around.
I've even heard that the "apostacy" is sinning against the spirit or the unforgivable sin. It is worse than murder or child molestation to them, because even known murderers and paedophiles are allowed back in the congregation and on the ministry. I think the underlying reasonis the belief that if your physical body is killed or violated it will be able to be resurrected in perfection in the New Order and "the former things won't come to mind". On the other hand, "spiritual violation" or "spiritual death" means no resurrection and eternal "cutting off".
The venom with which JWs spit the word "apostate" used to really frighten me, but i think after having seen the child abuse cases on Panorama and seeing the Silent Lambs banners waving, i realised that "they" weren't so bad, and it started me off on the road to even be like "them". Being on sites like these with similar minded people also desensitized me for the better and caused me to really question the "benevolence" of the Society. Whereas before, i only had niggling doubts but would never dare go on a website to confirm them with anything negative about the WTS, now i'm free of guilt and i have a profound distrust and even hate for anything that comes out of the mouth of the WTS.
I don't think i quite fall into the category yet, not being very active and vocal in denouning the WTS (except on the net), but i would be proud to be called a "poztate" even if its just to gain solidarity with other vitims of the WTS.

2 Timothy 3: 16 Is the Bible really inspired?
by Bryan intimothy stated that "all scripture is inspired by god and useful for teaching, ... .
" (klnt), but the bible was assembled much later than his writing.
so can each book which has been placed in the bible, without doubt, be inspired by god?
-
dorayakii
it is inspired by god the way the song "Layla" was inspired by somebody named Layla. nothing more.
very good and amusing point
In fact it is for sure that Jesus had no such program for the spread of his message beyond his disciples. That came later from followers like Paul.
i feel this to be true also. I think people like Jesus and Siddhartha Gautama have been special in being ones who only promoted love or enlightenment to relieve the burdens of the organised religious status quo of their respective time and place. As soon as Jesus died and maybe even before his death, people began to enshroud him in a mysterious aura of beliefs, rules, doctrine and dogma such as his ressurection, virgin birth, raising the dead and dramatically casting out demons into pigs who fell to their gory death (all pretty dramatic stuff, but that's what religion needs, drama). By doing this they turn a simple message of morals which was meant for close friends and relatives into an almost exact clone of that which he spoke out against (ie Pharisees, Scribes, Saducees).
As i said on another thread, if you read the NT objectively, you can see this process taking place barefacedly from the first chapter of Acts, and clandestinely even in the four gospels. In these books you can sence what's supposed to be there, and which aspects of Jesus' life and words have been embellished or outright made-up. In fact, the only thing that is probably reasonably intact is the so called "Sermon on the Mount". (Probably)
The people who had this agenda in mind wanted Jesus to be the Messiah so badly that they added these layers upon layers of dogma. The Pauline Christians added another layer, the Roman Catholics yet another and so on and so on through the Protestant movement right down to the Evangelical movement of which the WTS is just another layer.
The morphing of the most simple message of morals to the largest worldwide denominational religion in history called Christianity is excelently shown in George Orwell's book "Animal Farm".
Oops, sorry i went off on a bit of a rant...... what were we talking about?......
Ah yes...... No in my opinion the bible is not inspired. When something or someone claims to be inspired by god, that is often a sign of the proud, and often delusional mind. The WTS claims to be the only proper channel of communication between god and men, the Pope claims the same thing as did Muhhamed. The writer of 2 Timothy was no different.

Wow, really appreciate everyones advice. especially these hit a chord with me:
The Biblical drama which is stealing away the vibrant aliveness of the moment is simply mental programming. Shift attention away from thoughts and mental interpretations of life, to what is real, to the actual silent sensations of life.
I also found this advise immensely helpful.
I found that a popular Buddhist saying is quite similar in concept to this principle. The saying goes: "When you drink, only drinking. When you are tired, only sleep. If someone is hungry, give them food. That's all. It is very simple."
The first of the three principles kinda means that when you are doing various daily tasks try not to evoke an emotion or knee-jerk response, merely try to observe what is occuring in its own setting without thinking of what is could mean for someone in Outer Mongolia 500 years time. This is essentially the same as JamesThomas's advice to "shift attention away from thoughts and mental processes and focus on what is real"; but just put in a different way.
Another version of the saying is "When eating, become the eating. The mind will attain stillness". A slightly amusing parody of this can be found here:
(btw. even though i keep mentionning Buddhism, i'm not a Buddhist, i just find that some of their basic principles and techniques are useful in dealing with post-JW-stress syndrome.)

My biggest fear is that a third-world faction will break off and create a vital spin-off version of the old WTS, and continue to grow.
I'd never thought of that. Damn, that IS scary, and i can see it happening too. This hypothetical faction would be even more ruthless than the original WTS and both sides would use some scripture which descibes "the love of the greater number cooling off", or a "great apostacy" or a "great falling away" to support their own existence. Such a scenario could only make each side stronger.
They could have said, "Oh, did we say '1914'? So sorry, we meant '2014'.A slight error in calculation. Hope you weren't inconvenienced in any way." But they did not.
They could have said, "Well, the world *would* have ended, except we prayed very hard and interceded with God and He spared the Earth."
Instead, they did something much more ingenious. They announced that the world *had* in fact ended in 1914, and if the rest of us hadn't noticed, that was our lookout.

I enjoyed this quote. The evangelical churches, including the WTS, thrive on attributing an invisible application to many of the Bible prophecies... Jehovah's heavenly organisation. Christ's invisible
comingpresence. Satan being invisibly hurled down to the earth. The setting up of the Kingdom in heaven before it can be extended to the earth... A key to understanding how these organisations work is noticing that they never admit that they were wrong, they always have to say they were right and that the prophecy was fulfilled in a different way to how they imagined (preferably in an invisible way). What did Coca Cola do recently? New flavor: Vanilla Coke! What happened when McDonalds were accused of making people obesse? Sell healthy foods!
I also enjoyed this analogy. Every year, the WTS brings out new releases and new light. There is always the discarding of old light when it does not fit the present "truth" (eg. The Live Forever book, the United in Worship book, the Organised to Accomplish Our Ministry book).
Thank you for the quotes doinmypart. The WTS knew years ago that the old annointed ones were going to die off eventually. It must have had in mind for a long time to slowly re-structure the GB, pulling out old ones and replacing them with " mature, experienced men of the other sheep". They must've had this plan going for years and just put out a few off hand comments to test the waters. Eventually they might even go as far as saying that if the GB are in heaven during the 1000 years, who's going to arrange the great teaching work of the ressurrected ones?
Hypothetical future Watchtower article: "These "princes among men" are surely qualified to carry out such a task".

Ig:
Help me out here my friends, which KM is it which has that bit about "Noah not rejecting his assignment, since he never had build arks before". All I remember is that disembodied line.
That's song number 215: "Extending Mercy to Others". I'll do the first verse and it should come back to you... Profuse apologies in advance.....
1. When Jehovah decreed that a deluge,
should destoy wicked men long ago,
then to Noah he gave a commission,
build an ark preach the word let men know
Now did Noah reject that assignment,
since he never had built arks before?
No, but he made good use of God's mercy,
and he built and he preached more and more.2. Now again an old order is ending...
3. God has brought truth and mercy together...

Everyone's heard of 1984 and Animal Farm and a lot of the stuff in both of those books is relevant to the WTS, but i'd also highly recommend one of George Orwell's lesser known works such as Coming Up for Air.
Philip K Dick's short stories are cool, i found some of his longer works like The Man in the High Castle a bit of a heavy read even though i consider my vobabulary quite decent.
For a light hearted frolic through space, the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy in Five Parts is a ripping read if you can purge your brain of the film.
I've read all four of Dan Brown's books and all of them have almost exactly the same storyline (the only reason i carried on was that Brown's simple language was easy to understand and i didn't get bogged down having to look up every fifth word in a dictionary as i had done with the Man in the High Castle). If you decide to read just one of them i recommend Deception Point.
Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a really interesting look into human nature.
I also can't leave without promoting my cousin Zadie Smith's book White Teeth. She wasn't brought up a JW (her mother was) and she has had little to no contact with the JW side of the family. The book is not too heavily loaded with WTS bashing but a lot of what she writes about the borg can strike a chord. The best book i've read this year has got to be Stupeur et Tremblements by Amélie Nothomb. I read it in french but the english version Fear and Trembling is available. Its highly amusing and surreal in places, and its a solid narrative.

Kickin' it with Moses
by Low-Key Lysmith inhave any of y'all ever participated in the whole "i can't wait for the new the new order so i can meet and hang out with the bible all-stars" thing.
my old man always wanted to meet the apostles who were fishermen 'cause he likes to fish.
i used to picture myself when i was a little kid holding hands with job and moses skipping through the gumdrop forest and petting an alaskan brown bear completly unafraid of bodily harm whilst the 1800 lb bruin grazes peacefully in the pasture.

OMG!!! I'm with Richie, you lot are horrible for bringing back such stupid, (and hilarious) memories.
One of our COs used to get us to think about all that kinda shit. He was a musician and used to say that he'd build a great big opera hall and invite all the musician brothers as well as King David, and have a giant orchestra and choir bring praises to Jehovah's name. He'd also ask Moses the original tune to the "Victory Song" (Jeeee-hover is a manly person of waaarr)... It was funny how we all in the audience took it so seriously and nodded with agreement... "What faith this brother has, he can picture the New System in his mind's eye"... ROFLMAO!!
I'd have loved to have seen John the Baptist's reaction when he realises he's been resurrected on earth ("damn it!!, Herodias you bitch"). I think it would be cool to ask Jonah how he survived getting completely dissolved by the whale's stomach acid, and ask David and Jonathan what they were really up to.
