My Near Death Experience
by Dogpatch inhi y'all, just wanted to let you know i was out for a stroll on my bicycle for exercise last week and got hit by a car 100 yards from my house.
it was a hit and run.
i got up with only minor bruises but felt really dizzy and asked one of my roommates to take me to the hospital as i was dizzy and felt i was going to pass out on the spot in the middle of the street.

Zid - that interpretation of Daniel 12:4 is truly bizarre. So now children and those with limited English (or I guess those who the simplified edition targets) will believe that "rove about" means "study carefully". Wonder what the teacher at school will say when the little JW kid says "I'm going to take my homework and rove about."

BBC using Shepherd the Flock ?
by snare&racket invery sad to hear the news about the bbc and its disregard of abuse by some of its 'stars'.
so similar to the jw situation in that its all about the culture of an organisation and determination to keep the brand looking shiny clean.. .
snare.

agreed, Chariklo. The power differential is what I was commenting on. Its not just men - it could apply to female teachers who have relationships with younger male students, too. But the JW interpretation does not attempt to address these nuances. They are trying to reduce it to black and white. As Snare points out, these are not educated people enforcing the rules, so perhaps they need a simplistic rendering. I can't imagine a judicial committee trying to arrive at a ruling in a power-rape situation.
and NC I understand completely where you are coming from. It really is a case by case thing.

NC - I don't mean to derail the thread, but I did want to add a perspective to your observation. I agree with you. But here's another scenario. One of my daughters got involved at age 16 with a guy who was 35. He sees himself as a Svengali, this incredibly wise and experienced older man who taught my daughter everything she knows. He's a nut case and a creep. Anyway, he got his hooks into her when she was young and vulnerable and probably seeking a father image. He completely controlled her and she did not escape for 12 years (and three kids later). While there may not be a huge perceptible difference between 16, 17, or even 18, a large age difference between the man and the girl at that age creates a power imbalance that can leave the girl severely disadvantaged. Is it pedophilia? Not necessarily. But it is certainly wrong and unhealthy.
I've seen cases where a 22 year old is involved with a 16 year old, and the law has branded the guy a rapist. IN reality they were both willing participants, but the girl had not reached the arbitrary age of consent. So it's a difficult grey area.
I think the power imbalance is at play with the BBC, too. Many of these young girls appeared "willing" yet they were victimized by an older man who had star power.

What Would Be A Big Deal For A JW To Get Them To Really Question The "Truth"???

Having lived through the incredible experience of the total failure of the 1975 prophecy - I am convinced that only about 10 to 20% of them could EVER see that there are things which should be seriously questioned.
I agree. That particular prophecy really hurt people, lots who had sold everything believing the end was there. And then they all accepted it as new light and just carried on.

holding off on my baptism???
by madcow78596 inso i've been studying with jws since april 2011.
1 year later i decide to become an unbaptized publisher and take steps toward dedicating myself to jehovah.
i'm a single working mother of 2 with what i will call a very "colored" past.

madcow - I don't want to tell you what to do, even though I agree with everyone else when they say - run for the hills.
But think about it. This reilgion has already made you feel inadequate and unable to meet their standard. That is not going to change. And they are already laying the groundwork for a wedge between you and your children.
I was baptized more than 40 years ago at the age of 13. I've experienced first hand the profound damage DFing causes. I"m not an innocent bystander.

Standard of Living in the New System
by cobaltcupcake ini used to wonder about this when i was still a dub: since they believe the industrialized world is going to be destroyed and the entire earth will be one big garden, exactly what kind of standard of living do they think they will have?
while they might be able to scavenge, say, a microwave oven or washing machine; and they might be able to figure out how to generate electricity, eventually all of these things will wear out and they'll be back in an early 18th century type of life.
people of that time and earlier who enjoyed a high standard of living employed armies of servants to do the dirty work, but since equality will reign in the ns, everyone will have to toil like a slave just to maintain the basics.. or do they think that big j will magically power their washing machines and water pumps and all the stuff that makes modern living so comfortable?.

I think you have to really, really rely on faith that somehow god (Jehovah) will make things right. If you really consider the New System as proposed by the JWs, the impossibilities of people side by side with lions is just the least of it.
As a dub I never thought this way, but now I realize that I would NEVER want to live in a world run by the elders. Which is what the NEw System would be, standard of living aside.
But, I mean, you look at real natural disasters that have occurred in recent years and wonder what the aftermath would be if the only people left were uneducated drones.
