I would say that elders only have the power over you that you give them. If your friend really feels the need to respond to them, show them his doctor prescription.

Old time JW's did some very devout JW's refuse to eat pizza with pepperroni because they believed "blood" was in the pepperroni?
by booker-t ini have never heard this before until i read a life story of an ex-jws and how some jws in the past refused to eat pepperoni pizza because they thought blood was in pepperoni.
i do know some elderly jw sisters would complain about eating steak if it bled while cooking.
has anybody else heard of this pizza nonsense?.

Thanks for those, Bats. I was thinking that the blood hysteria was largely fed by the rumour mill, but those links tweaked my memory. Clearly the WT started the rumours. Insanity.
I wonder how they could explain it away now that they've got their complicated rules regarding fractions.

I Used To Hate Gays!
by DubR ini remember i use to have a lot of hate in my heart when i was a jw.
i remember i used to hate gay people a lot!
when news reports came in about gays getting jumped in parks at night or killed.i would always smile inside.

It's hard to admit that we used to have these hateful feelings. I felt that way about Catholics, the Red Cross, apostates, and gays. It was how I was raised. Yet my best friend was Catholic, and I had many good friends who were gay. So I guess my feelings must have been divided because I didn't hate them. What a confused mess in my brain and heart!
My family continually makes anti-gay comments and it's actually quite hurtful to me. But JWs don't have the monopoly on that. Just last week I had an argument with my ex, who insists that gays are evil because they don't procreate. What an idiot.
I'm so glad I escaped that lunacy. One of the women I most admire in my life, a mentor who has done a great deal to help me move forward in life, is gay. A wonderful woman who has been hurt by those kinds of attitudes, who was cut off from her own family because of it. I now hate those attitudes and work hard to counter them and raise awareness. I'm a much better person for it.

He's a creep. But I heard the same message countless times from other elders, COs, DOs, at assemblies, etc., etc. Women are second class citizens.
I must say, though, Cedars. I love the tune Getting to Know You. It brings back memories of one of my favourite movies, The King and I (which ironically is about a woman fighting deeply entrenched gender stereotypes). I also love the Lennon Sisters. Used to watch them when I was a kid.

Can a JWs Elder be "removed" if his wife is known as the congregation "gossip"?
by booker-t ini remember in my kingdom hall one of our 5 elders bro.
"smith" had a gossipy wife sis "smith" who would be known to gossip from the time she enter the hall until she left.
i don't know how she never was reproved or counseled for her gossiping.

The majority of elders wives I knew were notoroius gossips. There were a few who kept their mouths shut. My aunt was one.

We were not ever allowed hot dogs, pepperoni (pizza!), or any kind of sausage. Red licorice was out, and yes, it was the lecithin excuse. My pioneer aunt was always quick with the latest rumour about something else discovered to have the evil blood in it.
It wasn't until the government began to post ingredients in packaging that we were allowed hotdogs that had no byproducts.

WT Elders school: Avoid black and white thinking - now look at this zebra
by sir82 incontinuing on with my haphazard review of the recent one-day elders school..... in one of the introductory talks, the co was making the point that we can't view things merely from a black and white perspective.
many issues have "shades of gray" and we need to use discernment in such situations.. and i'm thinking "finally!
maybe he will continue on to make an actual, reasonable point!".

Thanks for this info, Sir82.
Re shunning and stoning. I think they are pretty close forms of punishment.

Now I've got the virus, too! Started a week ago when my youngest grandson got dropped off from his dad's at my house, puking, chills, diarrhea, lethargic, body aching. He just wasn't getting better. Each day his mom took him to daycare (she has used up all her sick leave and can't take time off), and daycare kept calling to come get him. So I did, since I have some flexibility to work from home. Little guy stayed at my house all week. Each day I'd think he's better, then it would hit all over again. Yesterday he was finally pretty much back to normal, thank goodness. But I've never seen him that sick for that long.
This morning I woke up feeling like hell, every muscle in my body aching, head ready to explode, throat gummed up. Then my granddaughter showed up at my house (her mom had to go to work) and the poor little thing puked all over the place. She's sleeping on the kitchen bench right now. Woke up just now and puked, then said, "I don't think I"m going to have a very good weekend." No doubt!!
I just want to crawl into bed, but I"ve got sick kids to deal with so I'm trying to stay somewhat functional. This is really one nasty bug, whatever it is.
