I left the dubs when I was 19. Hadn't been on a date at all up to that point. Chaperoned or not. When I finally was freed, I didn't have any social skills with those of the opposite sex. Very pathetic. I thought if a man wanted to have sex with me that meant he wanted spend the rest of his life with me. Very, very pathetic!!!
"Dating" means different things to different people. I think there are different types of dating. This is how I've begun to look at it:
Casual dating
Not exclusively with anybody, but more hanging out with a couple different people. This is a great way to decide what characteristics you like or don't like in a relationship. It's always best to be up front in this type of dating. Let the datees know you're dating other people and not looking for something serious. I did this for the first time last summer and it was great fun! I made some wonderful guy friends!
Exclusive dating
Pretty self-explanatory. Just dating one person. It is understood between two parties that you are a "couple".
Serious dating
I look at this as step two of Exclusive dating. It is understood that you are a "couple with a possible future".
Mug-Buddy dating
This is a very casual relationship with someone you don't necessarily like, but you have great chemistry with. Usually not much talking. Lots of making out. Both parties must fully understand the fact that there is really no future for this relationship. This can be fun too under the right circumstances.
I have learned that being upfront with my expectations and desires is the best route. I don't like playing games. I say what I want up front and express what I can give up front. It may make some guys mad or feel a little intimidated, but it saves heartache and awkwardness in the long run.
